Money or not, its still a Muslim Country with Muslim Values, women are not respected, let alone white women. But its a great place for a holiday, step outside of the holiday areas, its a whole different world.

If you are referring to oil, very little of Dubai's money comes from that. Their biggest business is tourism.

My ex recently moved there to work as the director of a new film school. He's homesick but loves it, loves the people, he actually decided not to come back to the states since he has had some great opportunities come up for him there.

If you are referring to oil, very little of Dubai's money comes from that. Their biggest business is tourism.

Dubai and the northern emirates, on the other hand, have relatively little oil. Dubai's reserves are only expected to last about another ten years. MEES figures suggest that Dubai is currently exporting 170,000 bpd, down from a high of around 400,000 in the late 1980s. As a result, Dubai has spearheaded attempts to diversify the economy and encourage private sector activity. Dubai has a strong base in trade, especially re-export through its free zones. Much of the UAE manufacturing industry is also located in Dubai, the biggest of all being Dubai Aluminium (Dubal), which is said to account for 9% of Dubai's GDP. The concept of free zones, in which 100% foreign ownership is allowed, has taken off in the UAE. The first was the huge Jebel Ali Free Zone, located just south of Dubai city.

Dubai's success in creating a non-oil sector, which currently accounts for 93% of the emirate's GDP, has prompted the other emirates to flirt with a similar market-friendly approach. Although it started slowly, Abu Dhabi has been pushing ahead with the privatisation of many of its state-run utilities and industries.

I completely agree, and it is VERY UNFORTUNATE. However, this is true of MANY countries outside of the United States...and other countries (non-Muslim) where their women are treated like 2nd Class Citizens.

While we're on the topic of Muslim Countries and white women...I consider myself a white woman, and I am Middle Eastern. I have visited Muslim (and non-) -run areas in the Middle East...Saudi, Iran, Syria, Egypt, Lebanon, Gaza and HAVE NEVER been treated unfairly b/c I was a white woman....even when I refused to speak Arabic or to cover my head.

Re: Dubai - Where all of our money goes to

I just started working at the University of Sydney teaching ESL and we get a good percentage of Saudis. This week I taught a reading about women's rights. It was a bit awkward b/c half of my class are Saudi men. It was also ironic b/c I am a women teaching them this. None the less, it was still interesting and for their homework I had them write an essay comparing women's rights in Australia to those in their own country.

I was so surprised at some things that were written. Some were fair saying they were following Muslim rule and that things are too dangerous for women. At times it seemed like all this was done to protect the women. And then other students wrote that they are treated like queens with their own housekeeper and driver (they aren't allowed to drive anyway). One thing kind of disturbed me and that was that women are free to get a job, but that does not "free" her from the housework and the cooking. Free her? Chat Icon

Still, I think these students are probably more open-minded than those that are in the country or else they wouldn't have left their country.

I can kind of see both sides to the story and I think maybe we just have different ways of thinking. We think their practices are backwards and they think that our practices are backwards. Who is to say which are correct?

I just wanted to say that I don't mean that men are beating women on the streets at all. I only am speaking from my experience recently with a work colleague (temp basis) whose parents lived in the middle east and although they were wealthy, had a fantastic place to live etc, she left because of the general attitude towards women there.

When I asked her about the treatment of women in that part of the world, she told me that she wouldn't want to be a white woman there, but because she was Pakistani and Muslim, she had a lot more freedoms.

I am Christian and white but I think it's very unfair to assume that just b/c Dubai is a Muslim country they treat their women badly, There really are some countries that are Christian and all white, but SOME men treat their wives like they mean nothing, especially in Caucasian countries(meaning counties from Caucasus area) like Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and so on, we don't really know what goes there for sure. As for OUR money going to them , that's also not true as someone already said above, just part of it, plus it's not just our money , it's every other country in the world that conducts business with Dubai.
