It's not for me and I agree I wouldn't be comfortable being so dependent on my older kids to mind my younger kids, however they seem to really have it together.
No debt, the kids seem like kids, the older ones seem pretty level. They are very conservative and it's not the life I would want and I have to think they are at least a little nutty, but they seem to be good at raising kids.

my mom relied on me tremendously for my younger siblings and we were only 5.
did it suck sometimes...sure. but that notwithstanding...I have a tremendous bond with them that I would never ever change.
point is, it's probably more a testament to the age differences between the older and younger children than the amount of kids they have. I doubt they have the 5 year old minding the infant.

I am definitely in the minority on this one and I have changed my mind about this over time. As long as they aren't draining my bank account, they can have as many kids as they want. They are not in debt and they are not on public assistance. They aren't having kids to get checks from the government or to hook a baby's daddy into sticking around.
Sure some will say that it isn't fair to the older kids to have to mind the younger ones but there are many cultures all over the world where this is common.
As far as college goes, Id venture to say that many families with ONE child cannot afford college. If their children are to be college educated, they won't be much different than anyone else who will need to take a loan or apply for a scholarship.
ITA. They seem like a pretty stable family. Back in the day people had 10+ kids and no one said nothing of it...plenty of them survived and turned out just fine. IMO from watching their show they seem happier than alot of families with a "normal" amount of kids. Congrats to them!!!

My fathers side of the family are Hassidic Jews, I remember when the first child on that side of the family got married (she was 19 btw), her mother was pregnant at the wedding. It's just their way of life. There are SO many kids on that side of the family, I've lost count. My Rabbi who married us has 14 kids himself.
They actually live very similarly to Hassidic Jews--very modest clothing, marrying young, large families, and mostly associating with people who share their beliefs.
The Duggars live modestly, and would probably be able to afford a community or state school for some of the kids.
So far none have gone to college, but they have said they would encourage them to do so if that's is the path they choose. They get GED's fromtheir hoemschool prgram, which I've read is pretty much the bare minimum for state requirements, so they are not likely to have have 19 kids applying for Ivy Leagues.
The boys are encouraged to be able to support a wife before they court (they dont' really date inteh traditional sense), so Josh runs a car rental or dealership, does soem sort of political consulting & is a profducer on the show and John-David was trying to open a towing business.
They girls seem to be mostly helping their mom untill they start their own families, but Jessa expressed interest in photography classes & soem fo teh girls mentioned becoming mid-wives.

yeah but seriously having all these kids cant possibly be good for her health. Pregnancy can be traumatic on the body and her body is always in that pregnancy phase...know what i mean?
I was talking abuot this with someone at work this morning.
My question is more along the lines of - how can this be good for her body?
I have no idea- I'm not a doctor, never been pregnant, etc- I just can't imagine it's not a huge stress on the body to be pregnant ALL the time.
I could be wrong though- I'd be curious to hear some medical opinions on the matter though...

I 100% completely agree. At first, a long time ago when the Duggars started becoming more known, i was like *** is wrong with these people. But i watch the show and compared to the Gosselins, they definately have it together. The kids seem happy, the parents seem happy. Who are we to judge? that she has a good delivery and a healthy baby.

i think its wonderful. I think its nice to see a old school good old fashioned values family. They are responsible, liev within their means, take no governent assistance. They dont believe in birth control and thats OK with me. Everyone is fed, well adjusted, happy and loved. I say in their family, the more the merrier.

I feel like the older kids have become the real parents....no wonder the older daughter doesn't talk to them....assuming she still doesn't because I stopped watching this show after the first few episodes. I can't even watch the commercials.

i completely agree. i was going to say something similar but you said it better.
i also dont think she is insane at all. her beliefs are the she will have as many children as the Lord will bless her with.
of course it makes me  but from what i can see on the show, there is no shortage of love in that family.

Who am I to say whether someone should have 1 or 20 kids? These children are being raised in a loving home, the family is completely dept free and all the children are well taken care of. I am honestly SHOCKED by all the negative reviews of this family on here  Trust me when I say that I know way too many families that should not have 1 child due to their own family circumstances, they are the ones you should judge, not this family.
