Dumb question - when do you start taking baby to pediatrician?

right after baby is born? Does that mean you have to find one before you deliver? what should you look for?

What do you go to your ob/gyn for?

Sorry if this question is really dumb. I really have no clue!

Re: Dumb question - when do you start taking baby to pediatrician?

Not a dumb question.. I had no idea also.

You want to find a pediatrician before the baby is born. Most offices will let you come in and "interview" them.

The pediatrician's name is listed in your registration information for the hospital and they will call them after the baby is born. The pediatrician will come visit the baby in the hospital.. I had no idea!

Then, my doctor said I will have to take the baby to her 1 week after I get home with the baby from the hospital.

Hope that helps!

Okay, another dumb question, and maybe I need to speak to my doctor about this. I plan to deliver at Beth Israel in NYC, but I would like to find a pediatrician on Long Island, closer to our home. Would I need to find two pediatricians?

Hmmmm... not sure about that one. I know that I found a pediatrician that was affiliated with the hospital I am delivering at.

That would be a good question to ask them as you are interviewing them.

Re: Dumb question - when do you start taking baby to pediatrician?

You can just have an attending pediatrician at the hospital see your baby then you would go to your regular pediatrician when you get home...

There usually is a pediatrician at the hospital. So if you are delivering in NYC and find a pediatrician on Long Island you would probably just have the hospital pediatrician check the baby. When you get home take the baby to your pediatrician.

The other option would be to find a pediatrician in NYC that is affiliated with Beth Israel and they would come in the hospital to check the baby instead of the hospital pediatrician.

Not at all. Just tell them that at the hospital when you deliver, they will just have an attending check your DC.

We had a ped check him out in the hospital, then we went to his office the following Monday (DS was born on Thursday night).

We then moved back to LI, and we've been going to my old ped ever since.

This is completely unnecessary. She should find a ped closer to her home, the staff ped, who will be affiliated with Beth Isreal anyway, would be fine.

I am doing the same thing. I selected a ped that isn't associated with the hospital I am delivering at.

YOu do not need to find two. The hospital will assign a doc to check your baby and then you will have to take your baby to your pediatrician at home earlier than most..maybe within the first week, can't remember but you should ask. The doc who checked out my son was actually my nephew's pediatrician.

they will assign a pediatrician to your baby at the hospital... once you are at home you just go to a pediatrician that you chose...

I agree. I was just giving a second option. Like I said in my previous post she could use the hospital pediatrician and then take the baby to her own pediatrician when she gets home.

Re: Dumb question - when do you start taking baby to pediatrician?

I think a pediatrician checks out the baby in the hospital. Our pediatrician said we need to bring our baby in 3 days after she is born.

Re: Dumb question - when do you start taking baby to pediatrician?

The baby will be checked by the ped (from the hospital) in the hospital right away when he/she is born.

Your Ped (if you chose one!) will come also usually within 24 hours. The hospital will ask you if you picked a ped so they can call him/her. If you don't have one don't worry, the baby is still being checked by the ped from the hospital.

You will need to see your ped a few days after birth. I saw the ped 2 days after I left the hospital (it's usually 2-3 days). They will do a weight check.

Then we went 1 week later. DS was 2 weeks old. Since he was gaining weight with no other issues, the next visit was when he was 1 month old.

Re: Dumb question - when do you start taking baby to pediatrician?

After I decided which pedi I would be using, I called them to give all my insurance info but they said to write down their name at the hospital on the forms, they will come visit me in the hospital and look at the baby and then 5-7 days after we get home from the hospital will be the 1st official visit.

Re: Dumb question - when do you start taking baby to pediatrician?

Thanks for all the suggestions and advice!

It seems like a silly question in retrospect since I'm sure other people do the same thing, but I really wasn't sure how this works. So I'll talk to my doctor soon, but most likely I'll just use the pediatrician at the hospital and take Chat Icon to see someone locally not long after.
