ear infections/tubes
my daughter has had an ear infection since the first week of february--beginning one week after she started daycare. We have been to the dr at least every other week since then. We did regular amox first, then 2 courses of augmentin. then her ear infection was gone for about 3 days. we were put back on a different antibiotic (cefdinir?). she just went back today and still has the double ear infection. she's going back on augmentin. they said if it isn't gone after this, it is time to talk to an ENT.
Can anyone talk to me about their experience with this? When did a dr say you really HAD to get tubes? I am really really really opposed to getting her tubes and don't want to do that unless it is absolutely necessary for her health.
For the most part, she seems fine. During this whole time, I would say she has only had 3 instances where she told me her ear hurt (the night before I first took her, 2 nights ago, and maybe one other random night.) she speaks beautifully and doesn't seem to be having any problems hearing, or with balance, or anything, really.

Re: ear infections/tubes
My DS got tubes at 10 months. He had back to back ear infections for months and was on antibiotics. The determining factor was that the fluid would not drain which can cause other problems such as hearing loss and speech problems. Can also damage the ear drum.
Getting him tubes was the best decision I ever made. He has not had an ear infection since. The procedure was quick and painless.
I would see an ENT for a consult. If he recommends tubes, get a second opinion if you feel more comfortable. But in the long run it's not healthy for kids to be on so many antibiotics.

Re: ear infections/tubes
DD got her tubes at 11 months after having 9 ear infections in 5 months. her hearing was at 15% so basically she wasnt hearing a damn thing, and at that age her hearing was important for learning.
i would speak with an ENT and since her tubes were put in she has had NOT one ear infection and her hearing is back to normal.
