Earliest to take baby out?

What is the earliest you should or the earliest you will take your baby out of the house?

My excitement over my newborn shoot was very short lived. They're done within the first two weeks after the baby is born, and when I told DH that he basically freaked out. I understand about how you should refrain from bringing babies out to public places early on, like malls, restaurants, etc, but I didn't think this was a big issue because it's at a home studio, and tantamount to bringing the baby over to like our parents house. But he feels really uncomfortable with this, and doesn't think that a 2 week old should be posed, handled, or otherwise exposed.

Now he kind of put that seedling of fear in my head, so I'm curious what others are planning. I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to follow through now on the shoot, since it's not worth the argument, and now I'm afraid to take the baby out as well.

Re: Earliest to take baby out?

I don't see the problem with it. It's not like you are prancing the baby all over the world, just from the house to the car to the studio and back again.

In my family, babies are brought out literally days after they are born. So, as long as you don't let millions of people touch your LO, I think the newborn pictures of the baby will be a far better memory then the risk of taking the baby one place.

Re: Earliest to take baby out?

We are getting newborn pictures done within ten days of Chat Icon being born. I have no issues with bringing the baby to a photographers studio or having the photographer come to my home to do it. But I will not be bringing the baby to a public place like a store or the mall until most likely after he gets his shots.

well my photog is probably coming to my house since where so far apart

i dont see the big deal bringing the baby out though - especially if it is not going to be around a bunch of people

Re: Earliest to take baby out?

My photographer comes to the house. I don't think it should be a problem taking out the baby, especially since you are due in July. I would understand at the height of flu season but otherwise, it's fine. If you have any questions you really should ask your OB's advice.

I was going to take the baby on a plane for a wedding a month after he's born and my OB didn't see any problem with it.

Everyone is different with their comfort zone. After DS was born, he really didn't go to many more places other than the peds office. I was a nervous first time mom (which is TOTALLY fine Chat Icon), this time around I can't be cooped up in the house all day every day so this baby will be out and about MUCH sooner.

As far as your situation with the photog, this I would have done. Like you said it's the equivalent of going to your parents house. And, if you wait until the baby gets their first set of shots to take them out of the house which some people do, the baby will be 8 weeks and not as pliable/posable and also will not be asleep the whole time which will make the photo shoot alot more challenging for the photog to get those super cute snuggle shots. I would try to convince your DH that to just bring the baby to the photog will be fine. Put it this way, your baby will be exposed to a gazillion and a half more germs going to the peds office for his first few well visits in that time than they will be going to your photogs house.

I'm going to be taking LO to the photographers studio for newborn pics. If you really think about it - you are going to have to take the baby out for Dr. appointments where he/she will be handled by another person as well.

I'm old school when it comes to things like this. It's going to be a summer baby and no way am I staying cooped up!! Probably be taking the baby for walks around the neighborhood as soon as I feel up to it and going out within a week or two. Pretty much when DH goes back to work we'll be on our own.
People will probably think it's nuts, but we'll have the baby at the beach this summer. We're kinda laid back with those kind of things!!

Re: Earliest to take baby out?

You have to go with what you are comfortable with...every single person is different.

I'm giving birth in June -- there is NO FREAKING WAY I'm staying cooped up in the house for days at a time, let alone months.

I know myself, I'll be out and about with the baby from day 1, and we'll be doing newborn pics as well within the first 2 wks.

My photographer came to my house, but I would have had no problem going to hers.

My DD was born in July. She came home on a Saturday - THE NEXT DAY - I had over 30 people in my house. We took her to my ILs at about a week old. We took her to the park every single day. At less than a month old, we threw her bug cover over her and took her to the mall, supermarket - wherever.

She has never been sick (knockonwood!)

DH thinks we can have the baby on the boat for labor day weekend...I'm due 8/24. Obviously, my husband is drunk. I'm not sure I am going to be able to go on the boat this season, let alone the babylicious.

Re: Earliest to take baby out?

As some previous posters wrote, I believe the photographers are really flexible and will come to your home if you dont want to take the baby out.

You may end up wanting to though... I took DS to Kohls when he was 3 weeks old because i had to get out of that house and be amongst the world again!

Re: Earliest to take baby out?

DD was born at the end of December...we waited the full 8 weeks to take her anywhere public but the drs office,we had all guests and grandparents come to our house..we were ULTRA anal....

this one wil be born in July and I will start taking walks with her/him as soon as possible but try to stay out of crowded places for as long as I can...

I do believe there is some truth to it...but I won't be as nuts as the first time around!

ETA: the photogs should def come to your house..thats what they did for DD

since DD is due in May I have no intention of staying in the house. i wouldn't bring her anywhere super crowded but she will definitely be out and about as long as I can be up and about.

Re: Earliest to take baby out?

My newborn shoot will be at my house within the first 10 days she is born. I don't have a problem with that at all.

You can start bringing them out on walks within days of the them being born it is just advised not to bring them to public areas or places where there are other children.

But again, it all depends on your comfort level.

Re: Earliest to take baby out?

My DH and I were just talking about this the other day. I think what we decided is that we are both fine with taking the baby outside right away (weather permitting) for walks and what not. We are going to try and avoid indoor crowded places for the first 6-8 weeks, so places like the mall and the supermarket. I think we will definitely have visitors come to our house and visit my parents, so I think I'd be o.k with going to the photographers house. I think it's totally a personal choice and something that you guys should agree on.

ITA!! I am due in late May and will be returning to work in October. I will be out of work during the most beautiful time of the year and able to spend this time with our LO, the last thing I will want to do is be locked up in our house all day. I will also probably avoid indoor crowded places, but I will be going for walks with the baby or to an outdoor BBQ or our parents house. We will definitely have visitors over our house as well.

Re: Earliest to take baby out?

DS#1 was born in the beginning of February. Even though it was cold, I took him out for walks right away. We were living in the city so occasionally when we were out for walks, I would take him into Starbucks so I could grab an iced tea or Duane Reade if we needed something.

I didn't take him to any indoor places that were very crowded right away. Most family members came to visit us but we would take him to my parents or ILs house.

DS#2 is due at the end of March and we will be out for walks and such right away again.

Re: Earliest to take baby out?

I took my baby out pretty quickly

i had his newborn shoot at 1 week old at our house

on the way home fromt he hispital we stopped at afriend's house -we had a 4 hour drive home - long story

took him to BBB at 1.5 weeks old in a sling and to a family party with kids that go to school and preschool

i made people wash hands before holding him and carried him in a sling in stores so people wouldn't - worked pretty well

also keep in mind this was during the H1N1 epeidemic

we also started walking outside at less then a week old - it was sept.

Re: Earliest to take baby out?

No public places until two months old. No malls, stores, restaurants, etc. Newborn photographer would come to the house. Outside walks, etc. are fine. I also have no problem taking newborn to Grandma and Grandpa's house.

Re: Earliest to take baby out?

MY BIL worked for one of those places and they are FULL of germs! I woudn't bring a two week baby there especially in the winter. I am having someone come to my house and do it.... I would say I wouldn't bring the baby anywhere beside my families houses and the dr. for the first 6 weeks. Ask your pediatrician.
