Early Intervention- need help picking a place

I am going to get Reese Evaluated with Early Intervention. I had her evaluated when she was 18 months but she did not qualify. Reese is awesome in every area except she doesn't talk. They told me to wait until she is 2 years old and get her evaluated again..I say if I can get her speech why not. I know some of you might be thinking that many kids do not talk until they are 2..but my gut tells me something is wrong. Reese has always had mouth issues since she was born..reflux, apnea..food issues...As Jenny McCarthy says it's "MOMMY Instincts". Anyway, my question is has anyone out there in LIF world used any of the people on the list that they send you...who were you happy with? who should i definitely not call?

TIA

i highly recommend marion k salomon agency. their eval team was terrific when we had hannah evaluated when she was 7 mos old for motor delays (she didnt qualify).

i have heard mixed reviews about all about kids, some parents loved them and others were very disappointed by the eval team and their lack of compassion.

Re: Early Intervention- need help picking a place

Call the Suffolk Early Intervention (631) 853-3100. My pediatrician gave me a number for a place (I'm in Nassau) when I called them they told me to try to go threw the Nassau Early Intervention. They said why pay for it when you don't have to. They will give you a list of places that can come to your home to evaluate her. If they don't think she needs it then I would go with a private one. Ask your pediatrician what they think.

Hope this helps!Chat Icon

Re: Early Intervention- need help picking a place

I'm sorry I just know a couple of agencies in Nassau. We have a great feeding/speech therapist, but she only does by me. I hope you find a really good oneChat Icon And if you meet one or more that you don't like or aren't comfortable with, don't hesitate to speak with your service coordinator to switch. Good Luck!

Yes, I did call Suffolk and i have a case worker but she is not allowed to give me advise on who to choose..she mailed me the papers with a list of agencies...it's hard because i don't know any of them on the list..never had a need to know them. If Reese does not qualify this time i will get her private help.

Thanks for your help...much appreciated.

They did the same to me. She just picked out 5 out of the list & I picked the one closest us. Not the best way to choose but, it was kind of a make a decision now moment.

We use MetroTherapy. Not sure if they do speech but it's worth a try. They have been awesome so far and I love my therapist and the case worker is great also.

Good luck.

Re: Early Intervention- need help picking a place

My daughter received her Early Intervention Services through The Childrens Center of UCP. Its located behind the Spare Rib in Commack...I loved that place. From time to time I would take tours of other establishments and I just never found a place that could measure up.

This was years ago but I was told that most places would be hard pressed to measure up to them b/c of the $$$ that they had..Basically these places are state funded or rather get their money from the state etc..but b/c of the wide knowledge of UCP and their fund raising they had the money to put back into their intervention services...At least this was how it was explained to me. When my daughter went there she qualified for FULL DAY. All the other schools were 4 hours and that was their FULL DAY. UCP had a 6 hour FULL DAY.

(My daughter didnt have CP she has Down Syndrome.)
