Re: For those mommies who have dc who have gone through early intervention...
I had my son evaluated last year for speech at my pedi's insistence and he did not qualify. The people I dealt with were very accomodating and very nice.

I actually just went through an evaluation today for Jack's speech and was really a wonderful experience. I live in OH, so I"m not sure about the NY process, but it was very stressfree and they did everything through play so Jack had no idea what was really going on.

I went through EI for my son who is now eight. He qualified for speech, OTand PT and an EI preschool program. It's a remarkable service and everything was always went smoothly and everyone was very nice.
I see that your DC was born in January. What are your concerns with him that you are getting him evaluated for if you don't mind me asking?

We live in Chicago and had a good experience. We started the process last Oct and he didn't qualify for anything. They told use if we were still concered to come back in Feb. After that appoint, he qualified for speech services. The therapist said he wasnt so far behind, but she recommended starting services now.

Re: For those mommies who have dc who have gone through early intervention...
I just went throught the process with my son, Jake. He qualified for speech 2x a week for 45 min a day...
The process was very easy.. It is about a 2 month process, when all is said and done.. My state person is ok.. FM for her name and info if you would like.. We used Cooper kids for the evaluation. They were fantastic... and we are using them for the speech therapy..
Jacob started therapy last week and my speech therapist is wonderful so far..
I am so happy that I went and got the evaluation done. It is never too early and go with your gut. I will say from the time he had the evaluation in March until now he has progressed on his own.. The speech therapist could not believe he scored low on his evaluation.. I am lucky we qualified and now I feel this is extra help in him starting to talk...
Any other questions FM me anytime.

I was wondering how it went for you, glad to hear it was a good experience and that Jacob is getting therapy and also progressing on his own, that's wonderful.
My best friend has 2 children that both went thru the process and so far she has had great success with OT, PT and speech. The process takes a little while but it is completely worth it.

Re: For those mommies who have dc who have gone through early intervention...
My now 8 year old son was in Early Intervention from age 1 to age 3 1/2. He received speech and OT. He still receives OT now through the school district and he is in 2nd grade. The evaluation process for us was thorough. He was evaluated in every area, and they determined what he needed. It made a difference in him, especially with his speech. Please feel free to FM me with any questions. It was a while ago, but I will try to help!

I dont mind at all. My son Jack was born 8 weeks early and had some issues that kept him in the hospital for 73 days. During that time he was on o2 for quite some time so he developed chronic lung disease or BPD. It is bc of this that we already receive pt now that we are home. We also have seen a nuerologist who says that he his hypertonic and he has a head lag (favors one side and has to build up muscles to help him pick his head up more, roll over, etc.) As of right now his adjusted age is just shy of 2 months so he is fine as of right now but I do not want him to fall behind. We should have pt for 6 more weeks but bc i know the whole ei process takes a while i want it to run smoothly and hopefully start ei (if needed) as pt through insurance ends. So that is my very long story. Jack has been through a lot and I will do anything possible to help him progress!

Re: For those mommies who have dc who have gone through early intervention...
It is a very stress free process...
My eldest daughter has Mosaic Down Syndrome and she received EI services from the time she was 2 1/2 months old...While a lot has changed since then the overall process is the same...
My overall suggestion would be to go through UCP...Not only b/c of the Hypertonia and the fact that he was a preemie but b/c of the sevices that they offer...A lot of the schools on Long Island are privately owned and operated. I just always felt that UCP really had the best interest of their "children" at heart. While some of the other schools were out to make a buck. You may have guessed that that is where my daughter recieved her services and attended preschool.
Please FM me any time.

Re: For those mommies who have dc who have gone through early intervention...
THis is a great thread in the sense that it can help bring the EI mommies together to share questions and concerns and realize that there are a lot of us out there whose kids just need that little extra boost!

Re: For those mommies who have dc who have gone through early intervention...
Thanks everyone! I agree us mommies need to be able to ask questions and get answers. I think it is so important bc agencies/schools are different and people do things differently. (does that make sense) I really just want to get services!!!
