Jacob is being evaluated with Early Intervention..
Sooo Jacob is being evaluated with Early Intervention for delayed speech. I know he is still young (will be 16 months in 2 weeks) but I just feel that he should be at least saying one word by now. He doesnt even say mama or dada. He was saying Daddy and Yes last month but then he just stopped saying it.
He doesnt try to communicate with me by pointing to anything. He does babble all day long non stop, and I know thats a good sign. When I spoke with the E.I. woman she went over a questionaire with me on things he should be doing and she said he was lacking slightly in his expressive/understanding skills and was showing a delay in the speech area.
So I will be having a speech pathologist coming here with another woman who evaluates his social skills to give him a full eval. It will prob be like a month before they actually get here (with filling out forms blah blah) so she said alot CAN change in a month, he may just start speaking and pointing one of these days, but that it certainly doesnt hurt to get the ball rolling. I have had concerns since he was one year old. And as a mother, I am just going to go with my gut and not "wait" as other people have told me to do. Even when I asked my ped about it he said "well Jacob has always been a little behind, just wait and see."
But I dont want to wait. So what, so they come and evaluate him and they say he's fine... great! Doesnt cost me a dime. And if he is slightly delayed, I can get him assistance and hopefully bring him up to speed quicker than if I just waited.
So thats my story... hugs to my baby boy that he winds up just fine, with just a slightly neurotic mother..

we had an early intervention eval and are currenlty receiving services for articulation issues, you are doing the right thing, good move Mommy I know actually making the phone call and waiting for the eval is the most difficult process, once you start therapy you wil feel so relieved

Re: Jacob is being evaluated with Early Intervention..
I went through the entire process with my son last summer, so if you have any questions, or need any recommendations, please let me know! It's definitely a good thing, so don;t be worried. My son did not really explode with his talking until he was 20-22 months. He did not qualify for services. He talks non-stop these days!

Re: Jacob is being evaluated with Early Intervention..
Im sure everything is going to be just fine!!!!!
My eldest daugter has Mosaic Down Syndrome..which basically means that she is "part normal" and "part Down Syndrome"...She received EI services very very early and at 13 she is in Middle School and doing very very well...She does need some extra help but she is pretty much on grade level...I feel a lot of this has to do with her EI education..
My Point is....Should there be any issues at hand that EI services are really really wonderful!!!! If they can help my daughter Im sure they can help your son...she did the whole speech thing..the school thing. ETC...Just look at it as a "head Start"...
Keep us posted and should you have any questions feel free to FM me..its been awhile but I remember most of the EI process...if not I can find out...my DH is a Special Education teacher!!!

Re: Jacob is being evaluated with Early Intervention..
Good for you with taking the extra step to get him evaluated...like you said if he does need services you are just helping him catch up...I am sure you won't be unhappy with your decision

Re: Jacob is being evaluated with Early Intervention..
EI is the best thing any Mom can do for their child. At my job I have seen it's benefits so many times. I have also seen what happens when parents choose to ignore early signs!!
You are doing the best thing for your son and you need to give yourself a GIANT pat on the back!!

Re: Jacob is being evaluated with Early Intervention..
I think it is great that you are getting this done. I am so happy I did it with Jacob and in 2 weeks he will be getting speech services 2 times a week for 45 minutes each...
The entire process has taken a montha nd a half.. so hopefully he will qualify and Jacob will be able to benefit from the services..
I wish more people would be like us and not wait it out... Your tax dollars are paying for these services so you have nothing to lose in getting it done..
Good luck!!!
If you have any questions FM anytime.. I am using Cooper Kids Therapy--so far so good...

Re: Jacob is being evaluated with Early Intervention..
I think you're doing a terrific job getting him checked out early. It's the best thing you can do - getting him the help he needs eary on (if necessary) or giving you the peace of mind (if it's not).
Many hugs to you & Jacob!
