East Rockaway?

What can you tell me about East Rockaway? I know nothing! Currently we have a co-op in bayside but are going to look at a house in East Rockaway this weekend. I believe it is near 7th ave. Like I said..I know nothing about this area. How is it there? Nice? Schools? Commute to NYC? DH works in Westchester..how would the drive be to the Cross island?

TIA!

I grew up there and my parents still live there (they are north of Atlantic Avenue). I believe 7th Avenue is in the Bay Park section, as far south as you can get, and surrounded by a lot of canals and the county park (Bay Park).

It's a very small town. The HS is small. My parents sent us to parochial schools (St. Raymonds), but there are two public grammar schools - Rhame Avenue and Centre Avenue. Bay Park is closer to Rhame Avenue. The HS is on Ocean Avenue.

Since it is so far south, I am not too sure about the commute to Westchester. You have to drive all the way north into Malverne to get to the Southern State via Ocean Avenue.

I know there are a few ladies who live in the town now, or have previously. I am sure they can give some more feedback. I will be there this weekend at my parents

East Rockaway i a nice town. My friends grew up there. You can find very affordable homes there and also very expensive homes there.

I dont know much about the high school other than it is on ocean avenue and it looks like a school from the 50's

Re: East Rockaway?

I like East Rockaway. It is a little small though. I come from a bigger town and my friends from East Rockaway say it is great, but small and everyone knows everyones business.

Re: East Rockaway?

We've been looking for homes there - it seems like a really great town. The high school is grades 7-12 and is very very small (90-100 kids in each grade right now) - so naturally the school is a bit limited in course selection (they had to cancel a planned AP Italian course due to low enrollment, for example) but I went to a small high school as well, and I prefer it to a really big one.

Parts of East Rockaway attend Lynbrook schools (district 20) which is an excellent district.

The park is not far from the house you're looking at - and it's really nice - softball/baseball fields, canals, volleyball, golf course, etc.

there's also a town pool/beach.

Thanks!

I see it is near the airport. Is there a lot of noise from planes?

anywhere on the south shore and your gonna hear "something" from the planes....I find it negligible, sometimes at 8:30 at night I'll notice one...

I live in East Rockaway, JUST bought a house in January...LOVE IT!

I commute to the city and it is walking distance to the train...and I feel it's in a pretty good location. I lived farther south in Long Beach for years.

Bay Park has tiny houses, but DH's best friend lives there and loves it. I live near St Raymond's (the catholic school chlmengr mentions)...I have a huge lot (small house with a lot of potential)
we got a lot for our money because the previous owner was being relocated to Cali.

Good Luck this weekend and feel free to FM with questions...
