I agree.
When I used to tutor writing for the SAT I used to have to do a whole read just taking out unneccessary commas. But for some reason I've always been an adamant defender of the serial comma.
It's technically correct in American usage, but not British.

Actually I brought this up cause I was re-reading Eats,Shoots and Leaves (yes a book on punctuation), and I was showing my FH "SEE! It IS CORRECT IN AMERICAN USAGE!!"
We actually have had arguments over the Oxford comma

I was taught to leave it out too, I think, but I always liked it better in.
The theory behind leaving it out is that in a list a comma goes wherever the word "and" would go, and in red and white and blue, so since the and is already there before blue, you don't need a comma. However, I think it looks neater and it sets off the white and blue, so you know "white and blue" is not an entity.

The "correct" way to do this has changed over the past few decades, so people learn different things.
Here's another one for you. Is it

OR

???
This is one that has gone back and forth over the years.

But 20 years ago, it would have been correct, and I think it's currently considered correct in Britain!

A possessive ending in S always gets a second S
unless it has and "iz" sound
Moses', not Moses's
and an exception is always made for Jesus. It's Jesus' disciples, not Jesus's disciples.

I agree -- I am for the serial comma--it just seems more consistant, although, if I analyze it too much, I start to think it is redundant. Excess comma usage elsewhere does bug me though. ( Although I am sure I am guilty of it on-line, I tend to write as if I am speaking.)
It bugs me that either way is acceptable usage in American English. Pick one dammit!
I work with someone who is always telling me to take the comma out (she is an editor, and not orignally from the US) but I don't listen to her, b/c she is not MY editor & we don't' have a standard for promotional peices.
And I hate her a little.

I realized lately that even though I KNOW the difference between their and there...I seem to use them interchangeably  I'm so embarrassed by this and can't believe it took me soo long to realize it.

Sometimes I do it online, but never in real writing. Online I have a bout 5 billion extra commas and I spell things that I KNOW how to spell phoenetically sometimes, or I startwrtiting one word and edn up writing another one, because I go into some weird mode.

Even if they picked one, and it was "no comma", I'd probably still put the comma there.

Me too!!! I'm chock full of punctuation and grammar pet peeves. The chronic misuse of the apostrophe irks me every time I see it.
At the end of the day, if this is my biggest problem I guess I should be happy!
