Edited w/ New Ques.: Can a collection agency

ETA New Question: Ok, so I found out this is a Nextel account I had in my name for my sister. She was paying it and then forgot she owed them the rest of the money. I NEVER received a collection notice or a phone call. If I call them and pay the amount today, can they remove it from my credit report?


Remove something completely from your credit report, or will it show up as something else? I just found an unpaid amount on my report from a collection agency. I'm going to call them tomorrow, but I've worked so hard to get my credit score up and now I'm worried this is going to affect it. I'm pretty sure it's not valid because I haven't been contacted by a collection agency.

if it's on your credit report- it's already effecting your score

if it's not yours you need to dispute it with the 3 credit reporting agencies- I would not call the collection agency drectly

they will try to make you pay it

if you dispute it- they will have to prove it's your debt- and I doubt they can do that- so it will come off

Contact the credit agency directly to have them remove it.

You need to dispute it through your credit agency if you say it's not yours. It could be fraud. This just happened to me, I found fraud on my credit report. Once verified it's not yours, it will be removed from your credit report. If it is yours, you have to deal with teh matter w/ the collection agency. And yes, that would effect your credit score.

You have to dispute it directly with the credit agency!
