Egg Donor / Embryo Donation

Looking to hear from anyone with experience on either. Just found out yesterday my odds of getting pregnant with IVF are about 5% and since I am paying all costs out of pocket, it just doesn't make sense to continue down that path. I always knew this was a possibility, but wasn't expecting it to come to this so soon - after only 1 failed IVF.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Egg Donor / Embryo Donation

a very close friend of the family just had her daughter from a donor egg. She went to Dr. Hershlag at NSUH (he runs the donor egg program).

Apparently, you get to choose which woman you would like to go with (i know they got to meet with her, but that isn't the norm - it might be up to the woman herself whether or not she wants to meet with you). in any event, the woman went through the entire stimming process at NSUH and my friend got her lining ready with some injections, etc. and they inseminated the woman's eggs with my friend's husband's sperm. she has a GORGEOUS daughter now! and, this was after approx. 7 IUIs and about 5 failed IVF's. she got pregnant on her first try with donor eggs.

she also had three embryos frozen so she's going to do an FET soon and if she gets pregnant, her children will be biological brothers/sisters

NSUH has a fantastic program - i would definitely give them a call and check them out!

best of luck to you! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Egg Donor / Embryo Donation

Cornell has a wonderful shared program which cuts the price in half.

I believe it's $18K for a shared cycle and some insurance can cover some of the expenses.

As far as I know they are the only donation program that you can do a shared cycle. At least that was the data I have from last year.

Re: Egg Donor / Embryo Donation

Welcome to my world. I'm doing Egg donor now. There's a lot of info in the beginning to think about. Especially loosing your bio self. But, also, do you want the best, are you willing to travel, what can you financially afford? If you get lucky do you want a sibling from same donor? Should you do in house or use an agency? Is it important for you to see an adult photo? Should you do shared cycle vs. single cycle?

I have a lot of info. But, don't want to bog you down with it. So, let me know what you need right now and I'll try to help.

Re: Egg Donor / Embryo Donation

I think most women who have donor egg babies say that they believe that this was their child and always meant to be. They are grateful for the donation because without it there would be no dream coming true. But, until you are ready to give up on your eggs, you are not ready to go here. Once you are, you will see a world of difference. On my last IVF cycle, which was the best on paper of all my cycles, and then didn't work, I felt that I "got it". Eggs are crap and its not going to work that way for me. So, then i was able to embrace the concept of donor egg. You will know when you are there. No one can push you to it. And for some its not something they want to do ever and go straight to adoption. Its not easy.

And honestly, some of my friends after their DE babies are born were still scared about a lot of it. I think at that point its worrying that you did the right thing, that this child wont grow up to hate you for getting a donated egg and stuff. There are two camps...the tell and the don't tell. And everyone has opinions on that. I'm sure when anyone has a baby they have thoughts that scare them (probably due to the responsibility). And probably with donor eggs it goes straight to those thoughts because its out there.

Actually there are a few places in NY that do shared programs. Another is LI-IVF ($15k when last I looked into it) and there's one in Syracuse CNY ($11k). There are others out of state. Some do a three way split. And then there are frozen donor egg programs which are just starting to happen now that are cheaper. Cornell is still in research phase. I have 2 "friends" who were successful and both around 28wks now in that program (think frozen is a 25-30% success rate now). Think its only $6k if you get selected to be in it. Heard SIRM was doing a frozen donor egg program where they were testing the eggs with CGH before banking and was supposed to be up and running by now but I haven't heard anything about it since last year.

The best places in the country are San Diego Fertility Center (SDFC) with 80% success and ORM (in Oregon) with close to 80%. No one on the west coast does shared cycles (and watch out for high success rates that they are not putting back 3 emby's to up the stats). Both of those clinics use in house donors. Think they'll cycle 6x before they retire a donor. CCRM has got high success also but I understand they are very expensive (they are in Denver, and currently #1 for IVF).

Dr. Braverman uses an agency. As does SIRM-NY. NYU has in house donors and might use some agencies. Cornell used to use agencies but now only does in-house. I know nothing about NSUH and East Coast Fertility programs.
