Elective C Section

On other baby sites, I was reading about these. I know the "normal" conditions you get one but you can actually ask? I didn't think there was such thing.

Re: Elective C Section

You can ask. IMO don't do it though. It's not easier/better than trying for a vaginal birth. There's no zipper in your midsection; it's major abdominal surgery and can be very risky.

Re: Elective C Section

Yes, some doctors will do an elective c/s if you ask. When I was at Lenox Hill Hospital we did them all the time.

I'm not sure if I would have the guts to ask.

Why not? If that is something that you want. Discuss it with your doctor. Your doctor should then explain the risks vs. benefits and if he or she is willing to do a primary elective cesarean.

Re: Elective C Section

I. Have known someone who asked for a cs..

I had 2 scheduled cs. The reason for my first was a large birth weight and the fact that DS seemed pretty comfy in there. I didn't ask but my of and I agreed it was the best route.

So many woman say I wouldn't want/ask for a cs. But you know what its your body, its your birth plan....there are risks involved in having children and yes the risks are higher with a cs, but that doesn't mean its a bad choice.

Re: Elective C Section

I am a l&d nurse and also have had 2 previous csections(first was emergency and second was repeat). I am totally against elective csections , but doctors schedule them all the time. Patients fail to realize its major surgery, and the recovery can be difficult also their is a greater chance you baby will end up in NICU due them ingesting fluid during the delivery where during a vaginal delivery the fluid gets sucked out as they go through the birth canal, but as I said doctors schedule them all the time.

Re: Elective C Section

I think it depends on the doctor and on the reason for it. I guess you would consider mine "elective"...But i had a major 4th degree tear with my daughter, so bad that I had to go back into surgery 12 days after DD was born to repair it. After 9 months of physical therapy and extreme pain, I just can't go through that again. Dr said i have an 80% chance of having the same thing happen again. I would rather my mid-section hurt than everything down below hurt for a year again. So i am opting to do the c-section this time around Chat Icon

Re: Elective C Section

My friend who lives in FL was terrified to give birth vaginally and complained so much that she had an elective c-sec. I wouldn't choose a c-sec if I could have had a v-birth but I am choosing to have a repeat scheduled c-again this time instead of a v-bac because my labor was awful and ended up with an emergency c-sec anyways.

Re: Elective C Section

I talked to Dh about this and he was not too happy about the idea. I guess I am just a regular nervous person.
