Elf on the Shelf - Am I the only one who finds it completely IRKY!
This stuff is scaring me. Like a doll is supposed to look at DS to make sure he behaves before Santa comes.
If it was me I would be terrfied of this doll. Watching me! Maybe I should not have watched CHUCKY years ago.
Am I the only one who feels that way?

My SIL just bought one for our kids and my DH is a little freaked out by the idea so I'm not sure if we will be using it

OMG! I thought I was the only one! It's so not cute, IMO...I shudder when I see it...so no, we don't have one

It's creepy. I was, however, creeped out by the idea Santa came into our house... and we did not have a chimney. SO... my mother would put Christmas presents in our hallway (2 family house) and say Santa could not get in because of the locked door. I felt so SAFE.
I do like the idea of moving a toy around and the "magic" that entails. I just posted an old Italian used to do this where I grew up around easter with a toy rabbit in his yard. Said it would come to life at night. I loved it.

Re: Elf on the Shelf - Am I the only one who finds it completely IRKY!
Well when we were kids we didn't have an elf in the house but my mom and aunts would always say, "Uh-oh......I see one of Santa's elves outside in the tree and he's watching to make sure you're being good". They did this for weeks leading up to Xmas. The idea of an elf watching us didn't scare us however, it scared us that we might get caught being bad and Santa would find out. I think the Elf on a Shelf is similar. I actually think it's a cute idea. We're going to use him for the first time this year with my 2 year old DD.

We did not have a fireplace. Santa came through the radiators. Yes, I believed my parents when they said that.

You are reading wayyyyyyyyyyyy too much into this people. Its a stuffed doll...its not real
We put him in a different room / place every day and to be honest we forget he is there during the day..its not like I walk around with the hairs up on the back of my neck thinking..someones waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaatching me....
The enjoyment that my DD gets out of running around the house each day to find elfie is so cute and remember he does report good deeds back to santa too and its nice when I tuck DD into bed at night and she has been nice to someone or did a good deed that day to remind her about it and to tell her that elfie will be telling santa what a good girl she was. To often we forget to tell our kids how proud we are of them and to catch them being good v being bad so for 4 weeks out of the year I remember.

I said "I" found out creepy. I did not talk about how your daughter liked it. I am glad she does.
"I" find it creepy because I don't like the concept of a doll looking at DS. DS has tendencies to get bad dreams. I did too when I was a kid. "I" find it creepy! Apparently I am not the only one.
Just like some people may be irked by something else I find innocent.

It looks like the kind of doll that is going to come alive and murder me in my sleep. No way I could have that in my house

I love it .. my sister started the tradition with my niece and my niece gets so excited this time of year that "her elf" will be visiting soon and can't wait to look for him every morning. I bought one for DD last year and moved it every morning even though she was only 1. just a cute little thing, another holiday tradition

I never heard of this doll and DH would NOT allow this in the house. He says dolls freak him out.

Someone got us the book & elf set a few years ago. I think we read the story once, I didn't even remember anything about it until I read your post. We hide the elf each night during the holidays and the kids have fun trying to find where he is in the AM.

I just bought it to start the tradition. While I love the idea of it, it is very freaky looking as are all the dolls from that era.

I think its the best idea ever!!! Totally genius! They could have made the doll prettier for sure though. It come beautifully packaged with a great book that explains it. I look forward to hiding him and having the kids find him in the morning!!
ETA: Growing up we always had "Santas watching" I don't find this that different--now he has a helper an ugly helper but a helper nonetheless

I made my own out of a stuffed Santa I had. He is not scary at all and it works. My kids love waking up everyday and finding where he moved to
