!EMERSON! had her first gyno appointment yesterday
yes thats right, i said emerson and gyno......
heres the story now....
when she was a few weeks old and i was cleaning around the area, i had noticed no real vaginal opening- it wasnt distinct- i dismissed it, thinking maybe it was just too small for me to really see...
yesterday morning, while cleaning, i didnt dismiss it- there really was no vaginal opening- shes almost 5 months old, and i thought to myself, okay, i would def see something if it was there....so off to the pediat. we went....
lets start by saying after getting a hold of the ped at 830, stating i think emerson has been born with some kind of defect around the vaginal area, he said to bring her in at 1030!! 2 hours??? okay, i know what i just said sounded weird, and maybe stupid, but get me in right away...so i arrive there at 1020, only to be called in at 1115, only to wait in THERE for another 20 minutes...only to have him come in and rip around her area looking for it, to tell me "i think its there"....i said "you think??!!! dont tell me u think, tell me u know!!!" he said, well, i am just going to refer u- to who??? a gyno.....shes going to need a cat sscan, mri, ultrasound to see if she has any reproductive organs!!! at this point, im hysterical, but call my ob anyway...
so i call my gyno, who i love, only to find hes not in, but the other guy was there....good enough, he says hes not the one to see about this, that shes too young, i need a specialist etc etc....draawing it out, he ended up saying its okay to see her, but he wasnts a sonogram first to see if there is all the stuff.....sonogram at 215, my poor giel, the only non pregnant baby waiting for a sonorgram....
get into the sonogram room, shes naked waits down, gets the goo and everything (im looking down, wasnt that just ME 9 months ago with my sonogramer telling me shes a girl, and there she was....???!!!!) ugh, emotional...
so, all her parts are there (thanks God,a ll day, i was crying, my baby wont be able to have babies, shell never get a chance to hear, "your baby looks just like you". etc etc etc)...so i call my ob, tell him i know he doesnt have the report, but the radiologist said it seems all her parts are there, can we come over for u to see why her hole isnt there???!!! so im still a little bit a mess with the whole wheres the opening thing....
get there, emerson is the talk of the office, no emerson is lying on the same table EYE lie on, naked, waist down (no there are no baby stirrups- a joke from my SIL to lighten the air)...2 nurses are watching the dr give her an exam....alast, my answer...
her labia is fused/glued together....got a hormonal cream to put on the area, which should open her up- havent given her the cream yet (which is a high dose cream made from a pregnant horses urine-ugh....calling my real ob today to talk to him about all this...wont it open on its own- like, her wedding day??!!  ) or at least, puberty, when she has her own surge of hormones thatll do the trick...
in either case, i share this story bc i wouldnt want any of u new moms to go thru what i went thru today....to say the least, i am changing obs, bc he handled this whole thing SO badly.....

Aw, I'm so sorry you went though all of that--what a shock!! I'm glad she's well! And thanks for your story--after all that I'm going to double-check my girls!!!!!

Poor Emerson and well, as much as I read that, I laughed at you mini jokes.
Of course it had to be tough for you to see and deal with and TY for sharing because who knows if another mommy will deal with this.
so good and happy to hear that its going to be ok for Emerson.

Oh man, what a day. Glad that all you need to do is apply the cream and she will be fine.
I am confused, you are changing OB's, or did you mean Ped?

Actually I not only had this as a baby, but DD now has this.
I was given Premarin as a baby (I'm assuming that is what you were given)
I had no side effects from it, but I do have a VERY large chest, and meanwhile my mom is flat chested. She always she thinks it was from the Premarin???
Anyway, glad everything is OK!

I had this as a baby too. I wasn't given drugs, but I was 'opened' by my ped on a few occasions (I think 4 times)

Wow Summer! What a freaking day! I was definitely thinking of you guys yesterday, I left a message. I wish I had known, although I probably wouldn't have been any help

She will be fine . DD had this and was also prescribed premian cream. It is estrogen based I believe and that is what helps open it up. I did as my OBGYN when I was their and she told me that was fine to use. DD was about 3 months old when the dr. discovered it. Her's wasn't fully closed though that is why I never paid attention to it.

DD had a labial adhesion at her 4 month checkup. The PED knew what it was immediately. Because it wasn't a big adhesion, there was no need for the cream- the doctor opened her right there (poor baby cried like crazy ). I felt like a terrible mommy.
The estrogen cream is fairly normal to prescribe for complete or more complex adhesions. It's only used very temprorarily. You don't want to let it go too long as the adhesion could block the urethra and lead to UTIs.

We discovered a labial adhesion (I think the same thing your DD has) at about 8 months. At 13 months it's getting better but still there.
Our Dr. told us specifically not to use the cream for more than 3 weeks. We were also told to gob on vaseline to keep her labia moist and to gently nudge her apart once or twice a day.
We were told this condition occurs most commonly in girls ages 0-5 and women over 60. In the younger crowd it will generally resolve itself over time.
Good for you for being persistent with the Doc's. I'm so glad she will be ok.
