Entry Level Salary?

How much is Entry Level these days? When I started, it was 28k. However, I spoke to someone recently who said she makes 20k.

Thoughts?

Re: Entry Level Salary?

When I was starting out I found that it varied by industry and what school you were coming out of.

For example, my first job out of Hofstra was in direct marketing, I got $30k. Someone at my company who was doing the same exact job as I was, started the same day I did but had just graduated from Cornell got $35k.

My hubby graduated from an ivy league and worked for an investment bank, he got a much larger starting salary and he got a signing bonus of several thousand dollars.

Re: Entry Level Salary?

Depends on the field.

An entry level admin asst is probably like 20k.

An entry level pharmacist is probably 50-60k.

ITA.

Secretary could be 22K-25K for starting salary.

Software Engineer would be $60K and up as a entry level.

Nurse would be $60K

It all relative to the job.

Re: Entry Level Salary?

I think it depends on the location and the industry. I know people who work in entertainment and started in the 20's and live in NY. not very realistic, but they do it. I know a few girls in new england who are nurses and start around 40k. I dunno what nurses make in NY. When I worked at a staffing firm in Manhattan, starting admins usually made 30-45k. And I have a couple friends who worked admin out of NY and made about 30-40k, so I guess that stays the same wherever you are. I know teachers make more in NY than in many other states though. My 2 cousins are teachers- one in ohio and one in Chicago and I think they started at about 40-45k. My 2 SILs are both teachers and have said NY/LI is one of the best paid areas in the country for that.

Re: Entry Level Salary?

Yeah, probably depends on the field as well as education level. I know for entry-level human service jobs (i.e. no Master's degree) it is usually in the low 20's. I am sure it could even be less than that if you are looking at a very direct care kind of role.

New Master's level social workers with limited working experience probably are looking at 35-45K in NYC/Long Island from what I've seen.

I also think it depends on the area you are looking for a job, as well. I know even with a Master's degree, social worker salaries can vary drastically from NYC vs. Long Island.

I interviewed for a social work position a few months ago in Commack and it was like 25K less a year than what I am making now for basically the exact same role. (Right now I work on both Long Island but I also have clients in NYC).

I also think TYPE of employment site and population has a lot to do with it as well (i.e. non-profit vs. for-profit, hospital, school, state jobs, etc). I also have seen that anything MR/DD related tends to pay really, really low.

I don't want to jack this thread, but this is a huge gripe for social workers. I don't want to offend any nurses on here because I don't think I could do your job, but we have a lot more schooling and experience then a lot of nurses out there and often are paid a lot, lot less. I am not saying ALL nurses, but still.............I've worked in agencies where nurses talk down to us and expect us to do the work they don't want to do, like we are some kind of "personal assistant" for them or something. I currently work with a nurse who I am SURE makes at least 20K more a year than me.......if not more.........and it's god forbid you ask her to do anything. It's like you are asking her to re-invent the wheel or something. And then she still won't do it unless it comes from my boss. OK, rant over. Maybe I should start a new thread. Chat Icon

Starting salaries for teachers are not bad now. In NYC, you start at $45,000 right out of undergrad; about $51,000 if you have your Masters. Depending on the district, LI is around the same or even higher.

Re: Entry Level Salary?

When I graduated college in 1999, I made $37K working for a bank in a development program. Once I was done with the program 18 mos later my salary bumped up to 45K.

Someone in the same program now starts at $55K.
