If so, would you mind telling me about your experience. Mainly, where did you go & about how much did you have to spend per couple (if you went as a couple). My BFF is planning her wedding now & I'm just trying to get some ideas for her. TIA!!

Re: Ever been a guest at a destination wedding?

We just went to DH's best friends wedding in Key West. With the hotel, airfare, spending money, and gift I would say we spent probably about $800 - $1000 for four days there.

I have to admit, I was a little annoyed about having to go to a destination wedding because of the expense, but we turned it into a mini-vacation and actually had a really nice time...so I would definitely go somewhere again.

We have one on Memorial Day in Venezuela. With three flights it is looking somewhere around $3000-$4000 for the two of us. We might go and do a mini vacation of it. Not sure if we are going yet because of the $$$$$

If you were travelling to one, would you give a gift or is your attendance gift enough?

When my husband and I got married in NY we had about a dozen or so of our friends come over from the UK. We were so thrilled that they came, it made everything sooo special!

I don't believe you are supposed to give a gift. I'm sure it wouldn't be expected after spending all that $$ on travel, etc.

Re: Ever been a guest at a destination wedding?

My cousin is getting married in Newport, RI. The hotels all have 2-night minimums and are $300-400 a night. Of course we are going but we are also giving a gift so it is costing us over $1000 for 2 nights in Newport to go to the wedding.

We went on our HM to Couples resorts in Jamaica, and there were many weddings going on. The resorts are gorgeous (we went to another Couples for our 2-year anniversary) and very affordable.

Re: Ever been a guest at a destination wedding?

We will be invited to 2 this summer- one in Canada and one on Cape Cod.

We really dont feel up to going to Cape Cod because its on the weekend and in June (crowds and high hotel prices!)

Canada is family and we will definitely go to that one unless they have it while we are in Aruba for 2 weeks this summer.

I have to disagree about Cape Cod, June is pretty quiet compared to July and August. And you can easily find somewhere to stay within all budgets.

We went to a wedding in Puerto Rico a few months ago. It was a lot of fun, but very expensive. You just can't get around the expense...

Re: Ever been a guest at a destination wedding?

My SIL's wedding was a destination wedding in Jamaica. We luckily did not have to pay-- as DH's parents footed the bill for us-- but it was pretty expensive. I believe that my IL's also foot the bill for one or two nights of everyone's stay-- most people came Thurs through Sun, with the wedding on Sat-- but we were there for the week.

They held a rehearsal dinner on friday night-- where everyone was invited of course, and then the wedding the next day and a brunch on Sunday.

There were a couple of other activites-- especially for the wedding party-- it was a lot of fun-- but it definitely cost a lot of money for everyone!!

Not a guest, but we had a destination wedding and recieved gifts...most seemed as much as they would have been here...though I honestly expected less as everyone had to fly and pay for rooms and such.

Re: Ever been a guest at a destination wedding?

My sister had a destination wedding. It cost us about $3000 I would guess. We treated it as a vacation. It was the best time ever! We also gave a gift.

Re: Ever been a guest at a destination wedding?

I've never been to one before and we are going to one in Key West in April. It's interesting about the gifts cuz I was telling a friend about it and saying it's going to cost about $2K plus a gift and she said that you aren't expected to give a gift at a destination wedding...never heard anything about it before.

Re: Ever been a guest at a destination wedding?

Never been to a destination wedding, but have had to travel to weddings. I try to make a mini-vacation out of it, but still give a nice gift. However, we've got 3 weddings this year we have to travel to. I don't want to be "cheap," but we may have to re-calculate the niceness of the gifts.

Re: Ever been a guest at a destination wedding?

My Best Friend got married at Sandals Royal Bahamian. We couldn't afford to stay there so we stood at another hotel within walking distrance....I can't recall the name right now. We paid around $1000 for hotel and tickets for both me and DH for 4 days/3 nights. We had alot of fun. I'm going to another destination wedding in May at Punta Cana, DR. 4 days/3 nights will cost us $800 all inclusive. Destination weddings seem to be real popular these days. As far as gifts go...my best friend refused gifts from any of us....she said us being there was gift enough. For this wedding, I'm not sure how much $$$ we will be giving yet.

Re: Ever been a guest at a destination wedding?

Not exactly a destination wedding but we did go to one in Orlando last February, actually the week of Feb break. Airfare for that weekend was insanely expensiveChat Icon because it was the peak week to go to Disney. The weekend cost over $1K for 48 hours and I was so sick we only went to the wedding, just airfare and moderately priced hotel... oh, yeah, DH had points towards the hotel so it would have been more.

The wedding was better than I thought it would be for an OOT wedding.

Too bad the bride left the groom after only 60 days of marrriageChat Icon

No more OOS weddings for us.

Re: Ever been a guest at a destination wedding?

we went to one in las vegas almost exactly a year ago! we got a decent deal and it cost us $1000 for both of us for airfare and hotel,a nd another couple hundred on food...
we didn't mind the expense, because no one was forcing us to go- we wanted to go and make a mini-vacation out of it. if we didn't want to spend the money to travel, we wouldn't have gone.... we also gave a gift that was about the same as what the couple had given us when they came to our wedding (local) 6 months before...

Re: Ever been a guest at a destination wedding?

we went to one in Aruba. We actually had been planning on honeymooning in Hawaii and then gotten the invitation to the destination wedding, which was a week after our wedding (during our honeymoon time) so we decided why not go to Aruba instead. We mostly did our own stuff (stayed at a seperate hotel on a different part of the island, didn't do any of the planned activites except for the dinner the night before) It was a nice way to get to attend.

Re: Ever been a guest at a destination wedding?

I didn't consider it a destination wedding until I read this thread. I considered it going to one of my best friend's weddings. I usually think of destination weddings as Caribbean.

Cape Cod in August. The hotel room was (believe it or not) $105 per night. It was actually a nice hotel room, not a dump at all. I was there for 2 nights with my parents Chat Icon . DH had 2 weddings the same weekend (cousin & best friend) that he had to be there. I planned on going solo but DH was nervous with my going alone because I was 7.5 months pregnant.

Total cost was probably about $400.

There needs to be a lot of coordination with transportation. Also the rehearsal dinner costs go up (since it usually includes out of town guests and everyone is out of town).

My brother had a destination wedding and, as far as I know, everyone gave gifts that were comparable to gifts for an LI wedding.
