Re: Expecting a boy? maybe TMI
I am Jewish, DH is not, but DS will be raised in the Jewish faith. That being said, we will be having a Bris. DH agrees that he wants our DS to be circumcised. The mohel we are using is a woman pediatrician and uses Embla (a topical anesthetic). DH's only concern was that the baby get some form of topical or local anesthesia.
On a side note: I didn't realize that Dr. Marchbein was a mohel too - he delivered me way back when and I'd love him to perform the Bris.

Just wanted to add I applaude all you ladies who can plan and host a bris by day 8. I remember still feeling like I got hit by a truck on the 8th day pp not to mention I would hate to have so many people around wanting to hold/touch my newborn.
This scares me too b/c I remember how I felt after I delivered DD, but I'm sure it'll be fine. But rest assured that nobody other than DH, the mohel, our parents or me will hold or touch my DS that day!

Re: Expecting a boy? maybe TMI
we did circ my DS, but I felt terrible after. it is painful, I saw how long he cried after If I have another, I will not be doing it. We did it in the hospital, I can not imagine having that done in front of other people I wish I did my research before, I feel like what we did was cruel and it will always bother me (please don't flame, this is just how I personally feel about my son). But the OB did a fantastic job, I still feel like crap about it

Re: Expecting a boy? maybe TMI
A Bris is a huge deal in the Jewish religion . I have never met a Jewish man who is still traumatized by their bris when they were 8 days old. The one's I have been to have all been performed by Pediatricians ( not shaky old men)and numbing cream was used. If you do not want people to watch, you can set it up that way . The baby cries for a few minutes and is back asleep.
Also, the mother and father don't "plan " anything. Usually plans are made prior - temple vs home, mohel pre selected. There are no invitations, it is word of mouth and the grandparents usualy handle all arrangements.
It is your choice ultimatly, but from one Jew to another, I would seriously enourage you to think about it some more before you decide not to. Many pp's explained the relgious and cultural reasons behind why it is important for us to stick with our traditions .

we aren't Jewish, but we don't believe in circumcising.
DS #1 isn't done.
I know of too many botched little boys. I also believe its part of a pleasure point of the male anatomy, so he can decide if he wants it off or not.
But like I said, we aren't Jewish...maybe then things would have a different view for us.
I agree with you Janice... I keep thinking that the skin has to be there for a reason, so why get rid of it, but circumcision was not something that I even knew about growing up in Eastern Europe...

that really isn't done - the circumcision is done by a moel (sp?). It doesn't have to be done at a synagogue. The ceremony is called a briss, and it can be a small ceremony in your home. Moils are very skilled at doing circumcisions, they do tons a week. I don't think you have anything to worry about if you use a moil.
yup we had DS bris at out house and the mohel was great. We kept it small just immediate family. However it was def very hard to watch, I couldnt stop crying...my DS was great though...I was the mess LOL. I am glad this one is a so we just have to do a baby naming. However if we had another boy we would have done another bris...thats just part of my heritage

Re: Expecting a boy? maybe TMI
We had DS circumsized in the hospital. Its actually done by your OBGYN. I am not Jewish, but I feel this is a very personal decision and no one should guilt you into it.

Re: Expecting a boy? maybe TMI
I'm against, DH is for. Ultimately, I might leave it up to DH since he has the experience.
There was a great piece in New York magazine the other month on it with both sides presented and the OB vs. Mohel discussion. New York Article

Re: Expecting a boy? maybe TMI
we are jewish and will be having a traditional bris. (if its a boy) dh's family is uber religious and i cant even fathom doing it anyother way. almost all of the babies have been circumsized by the same mohel...paysach krohn or now, his son. in fact, my nephew had his bris last week and he came back the next day to their house to make sure everything was okay. he was so fast and efficient that the baby barely cried at all. the tradition and meaning is very important to us.

Re: Expecting a boy? maybe TMI
wow after a few months my perspective really changes...
I'm definitely getting it done, but by a dr-mohel hybrid (either OB, or pedi, who has been trained in the religious traditions). And definitely in a synagogue, just cause I have too much family to fit in anyone's home... and yes they are all coming
Now the big questions is, what exactly do you dress the baby in, before, after, during ... etc.
Also since I'm not having a shower, due to tradition, they tell me I'll get a boat load of gifts then.
