Extreme Couponing: Fraud Edition
I quote this article below.....I am shocked and mad.
Extreme Couponing is Fraud
Give an inch and SOMEONE will exploit the system. Frankly, its disgusting.
My husband and I talked about it last night. Its one thing to use a few coupons here and there NOT in the manner they were meant to......
.....its one thing that the store's computers accept the coupons.
But to take this gross advantage? They ARE breaking the law.
Oh, and it costs you and me money by they way. The coupons get rejected by the mfr...the store looses money to a fraudulent transaction...and our prices go up.

Re: Extreme Couponing: Fraud Edition
As someone who does clip coupons, I am appalled at this. It IS fraud, it DOES drive prices up, and it is stealing, plain and simple. Have I ever put through a coupon that was expired? Sure. Most have. But not to the point that I got my whole grocery cart for free.
There are bigger things to worry about in the world today... war, hunger, disease, etc. But TLC shouldn't glorify stealing, either.

Re: Extreme Couponing: Fraud Edition
I don't watch extreme couponing & am admittedly not organized enough to be a coupon person unless it's staring me in the face. I'm fascinated at the thought that others are.

Is it fraud to slip in a coupon that the store couldn't get their money back on?
If you're slipping in expired coupons, aren't you "stealing a little"?

Re: Extreme Couponing: Fraud Edition
Be interesting to see if TLC addresses any of this
if what is written in this article is true, then yes, they're totally glorifying stealing and pawning it off as 'saving money' there are tons of people out there who wouldn't realize that what they see is infact illegal and may try it themselves because of the show

Re: Extreme Couponing: Fraud Edition
Like many things in this world, people will find a way to exploit the system.
I'm not sure I fully understand the whole code thing, but isn't it up to manufacturer to make sure that the coupon codes and the item being purchased match up?

I would think its up to the store. Hence why the mfr can come back and say "we are not paying you for these coupons".

I feel kinda dumb now - I didn't even realize you could use coupons for things other than what they were intended for! I figured the register would automatically reject them.

same here! I dont think its always the case because I've seen coupons refused for the wrong size of the exact same item. Then again, I think those were store coupons not manufacturer coupons

Yeah but if a coupon is coded for a certain item and the person doesn't buy that item, why would the coupon still go through? I'm not disagreeing with you, but I thought that was the whole point of the bar codes...

Re: Extreme Couponing: Fraud Edition
Personally, I am jealous of the people who have the time to coupon AND bust this lady for defraud the system.
I do think it's stealing and she is taking advantage, but the stores can change their policies on coupons so most will still benefit but people like these will not be able to exploit them.

If it is the wrong size or flavor it will still usually go through.
Some are really general and will go through if ANY product from teh same brand is also rung up.

I'm pretty sure that lady is being paid for her blog. I don't think all those advertiser links are there for no reason.

I didn't think you could either. In fact, I worked at the supermarket when I was younger and back then the register would reject any coupons that weren't for the exact item they were intended for.
I've only caught one episode of this show and I was under the impression that they had the 'correct' coupons, they just had a boatload of them because they tend to buy like its Y2K all over again and want to bathe themselves in body wash and Old Spice deodorant should aliens invade or whatever.

THATS NUTS!!!!!! I had no idea you could even do this! DH was breaking my chops the other day about clipping coupons and he mentioned the show saying how I could save us tons of money then proceeded to explain how much these people saved. Can't wait to forward him the article.

DH wanted me to watch this show too to save money and it disgusted me. Those people belong on the hoarding show that follows.
what on earth does someone do with 114 bottles of nightime cold medicine (unless she's operating some sort of meth lab) before it expires?
Why am I supposed to be impressed that they're hoarding baby food they don't need, cat food without even having a cat, when they could be donated to a pet shelter and homeless shelter/church???
IMO these ppl have an obsession that should not be glorified. Thanks for posting this fraud expose, I cant wait to send it to DH.

I'd only be impressed if they turned around and took all that extra stuff to a local shelter and donated it. Otherwise I agree, it's completely wasteful.

Oh come on people. You're allowing yourselves to be convinced that this woman is a fraud because some other coupon queen says so?
I don't see any conclusion presented by Jill Cataldo that is not speculation. Also when I google Jaime Kirlew's name all the claims of fraud go back to Jill's website.
Until I see that one of the grocery stores have gone through Jaime's receipts and coupons line by line, i'll continue to be sceptical of Jill's claims.

This is the status quo for most of these wackadoos. They just hope that they get a naive, lazy or frazzled cashier that will just let the computer figure out if the product matches the coupon.

Posted by Tilde They just hope that ...the computer figure out if the product matches the coupon.
Do you have confirmation that that's how the computer works?
The once or twice I've tried to use coupons I just handed them to the cashier hoping that I clipped the right coupons and bought the right items (because I don't know couponing) and when I handed the wrong coupon or bought the wrong item, i got denied.
Now my wife on the other hand, she consistently saves at least 15/16% and often exceeds 25%.
I can definitely see how you can get somethngs for free w/o walking out of the store w/ 16 shopping carts. To do that I think you somehow have to get your hands on a lot of coupons for the same item and use them at a sale time, that allows doubling as well as stacking.
Now, if you can use coupon x for product y just because the last few codes match, then I would call that "gaming the system" not fraud.
It might seem like symantics but in some circles Gaming the System isn't seen as a bad thing. In these circles it's seen as the company's responsibility to have systems or methods that can not be gamed. In fact sometimes company's know there is a hole in their system and they simply hope they can plug the hole before someone catches on. IMO, to say this fraud is seriously jumping the gun and not looking at the source of the accusation.

When I was a cashier/customer service for Waldbaum's that is how the computer would work. The coupons would scan through. Then, if we knew it was a suspected wackadoo we would hold up the line and find the item. Sometimes it would be the correct one and many times (with certain people) it wouldnt be. There were certain customers who were NOT permitted to bag their items until we finished ringing them up b/c it was known we would have to analyze the items.
I worked there from 1999-2005, if the system has changed since then - I am wrong.

We also had to stop some of our 'regulars' from bagging as well sometimes. I swear I could write a book about my career at Edwards
