Re: Extreme Couponing: Fraud Edition
this is sick. this is a high level of fraud b/c the amount of coupons she has and purposely using them when codes dont match up is fraud and a crime. Its the stores computer systems that are allowing them to get away with this.
This will only cause stores to get more strict b/c they will have to eat the cost of this when the supplier rejects their reimbursement requests.
Its bad enough our food prices are going up b/c of fuel and other material increases. This just makes it worse for everyone, whether you use coupons or not b/c the store will raise prices to compensate for this kind of loss.
It takes soo much time and work to even do this kind of fraud. She should be prosecuted.

It might seem like symantics but in some circles Gaming the System isn't seen as a bad thing. In these circles it's seen as the company's responsibility to have systems or methods that can not be gamed. In fact sometimes company's know there is a hole in their system and they simply hope they can plug the hole before someone catches on. IMO, to say this fraud is seriously jumping the gun and not looking at the source of the accusation.
Just saying. Its Illegal to use a coupon for something that its not intended for.

Why am I supposed to be impressed that they're hoarding baby food they don't need, cat food without even having a cat, when they could be donated to a pet shelter and homeless shelter/church???
I'd only be impressed if they turned around and took all that extra stuff to a local shelter and donated it. Otherwise I agree, it's completely wasteful.
Some of them do. I think I saw one that donated to a food pantry & one that made care packages for soldiers.
Then there's the lady that bought 62 large jars of mustard, just b/c she couldn't stand to leave more than 2 on the shelf. . .

I've watched the show and it more then concerns me. One girl was stocking up on diapers for a baby that she didn't have yet . And as far a I could tell, was single.
I don't get the need for the stockpiles of body wash and toothpaste. I get buying it when it's one sale for a good price, but no one needs 1000 tubes of Crest.

The last guy on the show donated his loot to a local food pantry.
This was the first time I watched this show and I was a little sickened by the hoarding and compulsive behavior exhibited. There was an older African American lady that was the only one who seemed to actually buy what she NEEDED - everyone else was definately a little loopy.

Several of the people featured on this show have mentioned that they do donate some of it. One guy got 1,000 boxes of cereal and donated it to the church food pantry.

I've never watched the show, but I was gonna say....these people definitely seem to be exhibiting some sort of OCD characteristics. Is it really 'saving' if you're buying crap you don't need? And I think it's great that they give away stuff to charity but that seems more like an afterthought than the primary reason for buying 100 boxes of oatmeal.

Re: Extreme Couponing: Fraud Edition
i didn't think about it adding up to so much. It's one thing getting an extra $1-2 off, but...
If the manufacturers refuse to reimburse Safeway for these coupons, Safeway will take a loss somewhere in the range of $1,800. Jaime's pre-coupon total was over $1,900 on the show, which she couponed down to about the $100 mark. How is that any different than shoplifting $1,800 worth of groceries from Safeway?

I will admit that I know most of the tricks, and have used them. Often.
Supermarkets are getting smart to it and are tightening up their registers to catch the differences.
It was nice while it lasted, not gonna lie!

As someone who does clip coupons, I am appalled at this. It IS fraud, it DOES drive prices up, and it is stealing, plain and simple. Have I ever put through a coupon that was expired? Sure. Most have. But not to the point that I got my whole grocery cart for free. .
Is it fraud to slip in a coupon that the store couldn't get their money back on?
If you're slipping in expired coupons, aren't you "stealing a little"?
I guess so. But I think there's a big difference between me turning in a .75 coupon thats 2 days expired and turning in bogus coupons for $1800 worth of groceries.

They have already started getting strict, i got a free hair dye coupon from Garnier and WalMart gave me a hard time about it saying they don't accept "free product" coupons anymore because of fraud coupons. I asked for the manager, she saw my coupon had the manufacturer stamp on the coupon and she accepted it only because of the manufacturer stamp across it.

Oh come on people. You're allowing yourselves to be convinced that this woman is a fraud because some other coupon queen says so?
I don't see any conclusion presented by Jill Cataldo that is not speculation. Also when I google Jaime Kirlew's name all the claims of fraud go back to Jill's website.
Until I see that one of the grocery stores have gone through Jaime's receipts and coupons line by line, i'll continue to be sceptical of Jill's claims.
Whether it is "gaming the system," as someone said, or not, it is still stealing and will have ramifications on other couponers and the general shopping public as well. When a store doesn't get reimbursed for a coupon, and the products walked out the door b/c of improper and illegal redemption, the store is out the $ and the product and will in turn raise their prices if it happens often enough. If every customer in a store on a given day "just" improperly redeemed one expired .75 coupon or took advantage of a glitch or poor coding, that would undoubtedly add up to thousands of dollars for the retailer. Yes, they should be smarter, but we should be honest and not exploit it --- the ramifications later will be much worse than the immediate savings of .75.
I just wanted to comment regarding the J'aime and Jill comment above. While we have no official confirmation that the claims are true, the evidence is pretty stacked against her. The other couponers on the show posted their receipts and freely answered questions regarding their trips/deals. She shut down her Facebook page and has a spokesperson now (does that mean she lawyered up?). Last year, J'aime allegedly posted YouTube videos of herself at Target -- tutorials, if you will -- showing her fraud and proudly showing how she was using $10 Whitestrips coupons on Tide and Bounty. Anyone who thinks that her doing this is OK needs to really think hard. The videos have since resurfaced online... if you google you can find them... It is really disturbing to see/hear/watch.
For anyone who thinks they are going to try to start couponing in this extreme manner now, be forewarned --- bar codes and registers are already changing. Coupon values are lower. The deals are not as good as they were 2 years ago when I started. It takes MUCH more work to get a good deal these days. This show is going to make some people start couponing, which is great, but it is also going to make the deals and stock dry up. If we add in fraudulent attempts at redemption into the mix, I think the days of double coupons and great deals will be over, too. As someone who does coupon, I will say that I do not like the show because it is portraying shopping trips that are unrealistic, especially in NY where you could never double more than 4 like coupons in an order.
Just my $0.02 :)

This is absolutely true b/c I do a lot of my shopping at walmart and if i have a buy one get one free for something, I need to tell the cashier ahead of time; and often walmart will not give the full value of the free product, but some amount of it off. Walmart is strict with their coupons. The ones i print off the web have to have the valid www. address on it and they have to scan otherwise they will not take them.

I am all for coupons and saving money but these people have serious issues. I mean who the fluck needs 40 boxes of cereal and 3 years supply of toliet paper. I really hope they donate alot of this stuff to those in need. They remind me of hoarders, with some form of mental illness or addiction.

Especially the lady who stored food/bathroom supplies all over the house, including under her kids' beds. What did people think of that?
I can't remember if it was the same person who also had a shower stall jam-packed?

All I know is, at Stop N Shop they do not accept any coupon unless it is for the exact item - sometimes I think I have a coupon for somehting and it rejects it - and I look at the fine print and see it was for a different package or flavor or size or something....

I want to go shopping with her once or twice in order to really learn how to shop well. But I'm not going to go around door to door to collect coupons from my neighbors.
The guy who donated a ton of stuff is great for donating, but he STILL has a hoarding problem!
Its fine to have a slight stock in your house that will be helpful during hard times, but you don't need 3 lifetimes worth of mustard.

I actually watched this show and constantly thought to myself "but how do they have SO MANY UNEXPIRED coupons??"
I get coupons and they usually expire before i ever remember to use them!!
I'm so bad at coupon usage. I would love to be better.
