Families who live in apartments, condos, co-ops please help!
So this is our first time ever living in something so umm close to someone else and last night for hours it felt as if we were living above a cheap motel. The older gentleman apparentally had a woman over and it was alll night long...loud, over dramatic and just plain old disturbing.
I wanted to bang on the floor but DH told me that I would just be starting trouble. I (and mind you it went on for over 2 hours)
Now tonight starting at 10:35 PM they are loud again so im sure the should be starting soon.
WWYD?
ETA: We have 2 little boys and what if they asked me what those noises are? (thankfully its past their bedtime)

What kind of building do you live exactly? Depending on that, you would need to contact your landlord directly or the management.

We live in co-ops so we have a management company. What would i say to them though that the people in the downstairs unit have loud sex? My DH doesn't think I should start trouble with them though since we have to live with our front doors next to each other.

Re: Families who live in apartments, condos, co-ops please help!
I just posted something just like this. My upstairs neighbor has woken my husband and I up since Labor day 2010. It use to be at 1am and 3am and was so loud and annoying. I hear her moan and the bed sounds like it is going to fall on top of us. I do have my ceiling fan, humidifier and air purifier on and it does nothing!!! Last Saturday she did it twice in the morning and once on Sunday. I could write down when she does it and what time... sick I know. I have seen her and was going to say something but what do you say?! I called the management company and they said try to handle it myself I just don't know what to say to her. Im afraid she is going to make it worse for us if I say something. I have talked to everyone about this. My situation is different since it doesn't last that long 10mind or longer. I just find it gross and disturbing.I was thinking of ringing her doorbell when they were at it to see what happens. If you can call the management company. Put some loud tv on and maybe send a letter telling him you can hear everything. Do you have rules where their floor is suppose to be covered? Good Luck! I feel your pain.

Well, it's what it is, no?
I think you will start trouble if you write to the company. "Dear management, the old fart downstairs screws his old lady old all night long and DAMN, they are loud!!" ;)
BUT if you slip a nice little note under his door saying that perhaps he wasn't aware how this the walls are and you have 2 small children and like to sleep at night etc etc etc. perhaps he will take the hint. And you still don't need to see him face to face.

Were above them so luckily I don't get the added affect of furniture moving but the over dramatics of the moans and yells are ridiculous.

Re: Families who live in apartments, condos, co-ops please help!
I actually did say to the management company, since I figured she has heard everything that my neighbor upstairs has been having really loud sex. I then turned her in for not having enough carpet on her floor but they can only send her a letter. I can eventually have them go up there to investigate and make her get carpet all over however I wish they would make her get a new mattress and a muzzle.

Problem is they are chain smokers and every time I step out for my mail, garbage, to leave there is someone always standing right outside my door smoking. (which is a whole other thing that urks me cause the smell comes right in my house) I just dont like confrontation im a wuss

Re: Families who live in apartments, condos, co-ops please help!
I totally understand. Her boyfriend smokes outside too and sometimes out the upstairs window. I run into him all the time and I ran into her last week in the laundry room. I couldn't look at her the same. I wanted to tell her 'I hear you having loud sex with your boyfriend and your moans disturb me' but it wouldn't come out of my mouth. I figured she would go back and make it much worse then it is. I just don't get people. We have the downstairs with the backyard and my dog barks when the mailman comes. She also has annoying cats that run all over. In fact when she moved in I asked her to get carpet for the stairs since we heard the cats all the time.

Re: Families who live in apartments, condos, co-ops please help!
3 ways to play it...
1. politely talk to him...tell him you have young kids who are starting to question the "noises" coming through the floor in their bedroom...
2. Dish it right back.. start jumping, dropping things, stomping, etc....
3. Co-op board/ management company....
EDT: thought of a 4th.... record it.. put it on youtube and send them the link...?

Believe me I hear you loud and clear! I have had my share of neighbors from hell.
Maybe in this case writing a letter to management is the best approach. You don't really need to describe exactly what's going on, on say the words. Just tell them they are very loud at very inappropriate times and you want it to stop!

Re: Families who live in apartments, condos, co-ops please help!
They probably don't realize how loud they are being. I definitely would not contact the management company before addressing it with them first. If you are too shy to talk to him, then put a note in his mailbox or under his door. Some people aren't aware how loud they are being. I had the same issue in the past and it stopped as soon as I sent the note.

Re: Families who live in apartments, condos, co-ops please help!
This is a common problem for many people who live in apartment buildings. I dont think there are really any solutions other than just telling them to keep things quiet or just move.
When I lived alone at my last apt building, I had a downstairs neighbor who loved to pork his hot porn look alike girlfriend every single night. I'd know they were getting it on because they'd blast Guns N Roses' "Welcome to the Jungle" song and nothing but moans and groans for 2-3 hrs..Sure, it annoyed the heck out of me esp on a Wednesday night when I needed to be awake at 6 am..but I just dealt with it until I was able to move into a house..

We lived in a condo for 5 years and had the same issue. I would say don't say anything--we started a war w/ our upstairs neighbor and it got bad--garbage on our stoop, etc.

The things people do! I agree Im just going to deal with it and eventually we will move. I just have to keep telling myself 10-15 minutes is not s bad as 2-3hrs.
