Family Car help!

Hello all!

So new mom to a beautiful 12 week old DD and needs some advice! DH and I are going to look at cars today b/c my lease is up and we are thinking of buyingChat Icon a new one.

At the top of our list is the Subaru 2009 Forrester, followed by the Toyota Rav 4 and the Honda CRV.

Any imput on these cars, how they are with kids and suggestions of dealerships that you have gone to and trust are greatly appreciated (we live in Bayville) but we are willing to travel anywhere on the island!

TIA!

I'm in a similar situation. We have a 4 month old and are trying to sell our Nissan pick-up and buy a "small" SUV.

We're seriously considering the Forester because of its new safety rankings and it seems to be a good value. We're looking at 2009, with a more basic package (not the turbo) but we're getting the panoramic moon roof and the cost is about $23k.

Even though our other car is a Honda, I'm not interested in the Honda CRV as an option because I don't like the way it looks..JMO.

To me, the Rav4 doesn't have enough storage space in the back to warrant the loss in gas mileage. (The Forester gets 20/26mpg!)

Good luck!! It's so hard to decide!

Re: Family Car help!

My dad is in the car business and he said you can't go wrong with a Subaru - never have any recalls, safety etc.

It is just such a big commitment!! I have never bought a new car and my DH really believes in buying rather than leasing!!!

So excited but nervous!

Re: Family Car help!

I posted on your other thread, but another thing to do is take your carseat and actually put it into the backseat and see how much room you have. Like I said on the other thread, you would be surprised at how small the smaller SUV backseats are compared to sedans.

Re: Family Car help!

I have a 2007 Toyota Rav4 V6 Limited and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT!!!!! I can't say enough great things about it!! If you like your car to have "spunk" the V6 has a ton of power which is awesome, the seats are comfortable, it's very roomy inside, and there is an amazing amount of cargo space. (The rear seats fold flat for more space) It's just a really, really great truck. We test drove a lot of cars/trucks and this was the best plus it's consistently been a Consumer Reports Best Buy too. FYI - The model we got came out to a little over $30K. (We're buying not leasing) Good luck!! Here is a pic.....hope it works!!

I am def. going to bring the car seat with us. I am really leaning toward the Subaru, b/c we need to trunk space because we will be bringing DD with us to daycare at a private house and we have lots of stuff to take with us.

I have heard about the size of the backseat and we are going to check out some Sedans also!

Thanks for the advice!Chat Icon

The RAV has a ridiculous amount of cargo space actually and the rated mileage on it is 19/27. I live in Stony Brook and commuted to Queens every day with the RAV and it was great on gas plus it takes regular 87 too which is a plus. Considering it's an SUV it's very fuel efficient. Good luck with whatever you choose. Chat Icon

Re: Family Car help!

Just to throw another car in there in case you weren't set on those, we just bought the Hyundai Santa Fe and love it. Roomy trunk space and storage. Also has very roomy seating, both front and back and so far getting good mileage on it too. And they have some good deals going on now.

i have a honda CRV and really like it a lot.Theirs plenty of room (even with our britax carseat for DS) and everyone who has rode in the back has said how comfortable it is. The trunk space is great...i have his stroller, pack and play and my toys for work in their and theirs still plenty of room.
Also its GREAT on gas! We also have a honda civic and theirs not much of a price different when we fill up for gas which is awesome as with so many SUV's its so expensive to fill. I would love to eventually go for the Pilot next though just b/c its even bigger but truthfully its not that good on gas so for now i am happy with the CRV.
