Family kicked off of Jet Blue flight after toddler’s temper tantrum
A trip home from a dream vacation turned into a nightmare for one family after they were kicked off a JetBlue flight home.
The airline's problem? The family's 2-year-old daughter had thrown a temper tantrum.
Colette Vieau and her husband were flying back from Turks and Caicos last month when their daughter Natalie refused to sit down, they told NBC-10
this week.
Eventually, she says, they got the tot in her seat and were ready for takeoff - when instead they were booted.
"We were holding them down with all of our might, seat belt on. And I said, 'We have them seated. Can we go now?' (The flight attendant) said the pilot's made a decision to turn the plane around," Vieau told the TV station.
The family ended up having to stay overnight in a hotel and rebook their flights, which ended up adding an additional $2,000 to their trip.
Vieau said she was flabbergasted at the airline's actions.
"We did what we were asked to do. We weren't belligerent, drunk, angry or screaming. We were just having a hard time struggling with our children," Vieau said.
In a statement to the TV station the airline said the flight "had customers that did not comply with crew member instructions for a prolonged time period. The captain elected to remove the customers involved for the safety of all customers and crew members on board."

This statement makes me think that even though the child was in her seat she was still pitching a loud fit & struggling. If so, as much as it reallllly stinks for them, I can understand why the airline did what they did. If this kid needed 2 adults to restrain her with all of their might before takeoff how could they promise that she's calm down & not be a major distraction to the crew & other customers after takeoff? Unfortunately I think it was a lose-lose situation no matter what...

while I pray its never me, I don't think the airline was out of line here. It was a "prolonged period of time". If the tot was just screaming & crying, one thing, but this seems like she was worse than that.

yes, if the crew can't do their jobs properly because they're all focusing on 'holding the toddler down' for the entire flight - then yes, the other passengers safety is compromised.
while it sux for the parents, from how it was described, it sounds like the little girl was not going to calm down and the pilots had to make a decision

I agree. For some reason, I don't think the parents were as victimized as they are portraying. Reading the statement that they were holding her down with all of their might makes me believe this kid was far from under control for a long period of time.
And while I hope this NEVER happens to me with DS and I really should not say this but if I was a passenger on that flight, I would have been relieved.

Re: Family kicked off of Jet Blue flight after toddler’s temper tantrum
I may burn for this but... I see no problem with the airline in this at all. Given the few facts given. It was a prolonged period of time and they were never actually secure. It also implies 'they' and not just one child.
(deleted as it doesnt apply)
Flying is a privilage not a right.
ETA: An afterthought. I dont think i saw the age of the child. There is a wide range for 'toddler' and some can be forced, others is a losing battle. But still agree that captain has the right.

Re: Family kicked off of Jet Blue flight after toddler’s temper tantrum
I also think there is more to this story. I have flown a lot over the years, mainly before I had DS. I have flown with tons of kids - some behaved beautifully, some were horrors. I never heard anyone on an airline threaten to remove children from a flight, so I think this situation must have been awful. If you have to hold a child down with all your might in order to take off, there's a good chance they won't stay in their seats during the flight, when there are safety risks.
I did see someone removed from a plane. We were still at the gate, but it took over about an hour and a half for this person to leave the plane. He had a seizure and the flight attendants were telling him he had to deplane and get checked out before flying because if there was a medical emergency, it was likely they wouldn't be able to land and get him attention in time. The guy refused and everyone else had to wait, the pilot came back, then airport security and finally NYPD was called and took the guy off. The airline is liable if they knew there was a problem and they didn't respond. I think they probably did the right thing and the parents are pissed.

Re: Family kicked off of Jet Blue flight after toddler’s temper tantrum
I agree with what the airline did. And I have to say if my kid was that unruly I think I would have taken myself off the flight.
I saw the story on the news this morning and I find the fact they they claim that it cost them $2K because they had to stay over and re-book. I know many airlines will put them on the next available flight. Southwest has kicked people off due to beign drunk and they re-book them at no cost on the next flight they are sober for. I would think it would be similar in this case. Also where they heck did they stay the Ritz. Airport hotels are not $2K a night.

I can tell you that when I tried to get my boss' son home when he missed his connecting flight due to weather an overnight stay ($200 hilton) with a one-way ticket home would have cost $2800

I would love to hear the perspective of someone else who was on the flight and witnessed this.

My 2 year old throws super tantrums like this. I can't imagine having to pay an extra 2k for a flight home, that sucks. While it may have been justified to remove them from the flight, the expense then should have been on the airline.

i agree. before you know it, other passengers are pissed that they are delayed and choice words and spewed and the parents feel assaulted and then all hell breaks lose! the last thing you want is a physical altercation on a plane ready to depart. they have to do whatever they need in order to prevent that chaos.

Yes it does suck, but this shouldn't be at the expense of the airline. What happened to taking responsibility for our (and our children's) actions?? It was in no way the airlines fault that they couldnt safely take off due to the behavior of this child.

I also think there is probably more to this story than was released. I wonder if maybe they couldn't take the next flight. Maybe the child had special needs and was so upset that it took a day to calm the child down before they could try it again.

ITA with Katareen, there is NO way the airline should be responsible... as a parent we are responsible for our children.

I'm sure! Unless she was some sort of xmen super mutant child I think the whole "holding her down with all their might" thing is just an expression. A two year old doesn't compromise the safety of a plane being flown by a pilot behind a locked door... She was probably just so "annoying" to the other passengers that they didn't want to deal with her.
