Family resorts in driving distance- UPDATED
For years my friends have been going away MLK weekend to Vermont. This started long before kids. It has now totally changed. All the "singles" have bowed out and it has become more of a family weekend. Last year we rented and it kind of sucked. We drove up in a really bad snow storm, took 5-6 hours to get there, it was brutally cold (the kids didn't even want to be outside and only skied for an hour), and it was super expensive ($850 per family for the house, plus food/alcohol, and skiing.) We decided its ridiculous to go all the way to Vermont when we really just hang out in the house anyway. Our number one pick right now is Grand Cascades Lodge. My friend stayed there this summer and said it was great. We would need 3, two bedroom units. The problem is, it's $1000 a family just for the room. I started doing some research and found Split Rock in the Poconos. It's a lot more affordable, but the reviews aren't so great. There's Woodloch Pines, which can be really pricey, but I saw they have an option to rent townhouses or houses. It includes all of the hotel amenities, just not food, which woud actually be just fine with us. I also found Hope Lake Lodge. Has anyone stayed at any of these places? I'm also open to suggestions. What we want is a nice indoor pool, some kind of hang-out area for the grown ups (either a house or timeshare type unit), restaurant/bar on site or close by, lots of activities for the kids. We don't need it to include food, we usually bring up trays of food and a big wedge and then go out to eat once or twice. Any help would be appreciated!
UPDATE- I called Woodloch today and I'm 98% sure we're booking there. We're going to rent a 5 bedroom house for 3 nights for $2800- which winds up being $560 a family. We will have access to all the resort amenities- arts and crafts, pools, entertainment, hay rides, etc... it doesn't include food, but we can make arrangements to eat at their restaurants, they offer catering, or we can bring it ourselves. I think it's going to be great and I can't wait!

I've been going to Woodloch forever, though I've never stayed in a house there. But it's a great place to go. Yes, expensive, but your kids definitely won't be bored! Feel free to FM me if you have any specific questions about it.

What about Villaroma? I've only been there in the summer but I'm pretty sure they have tons of activities in the winter

Re: Family resorts in driving distance
You can rent rental units from owners at grand cascade for much cheaper. Go to vrbo.com. My husband and I did a weekend away alone together last year and we rented from an owner at Grand Cascade. Ended up being $450 for the weekend vs. the $800 plus the resort wanted for the same exact room.

Awesome advice! I'm going to go check it out!

Rocking Horse looks great. Too bad their prices just keep going up. It was almost $3,000 for 3 people for 3 nights when I called them the other day.

To me, that's insane! I can go to Mexico for that price for 5-7 days.
