What will she do when he goes to school? Forbide all kids from eating PBJ in the cafeteria? He can never go to a Yankees game? They sell peanuts.
Actually, at school, yes, they will ask all parents not to send their child in with peanuts, peanut butter, etc. It's not at all uncommon when a child has a severe peanut allergy. Peanut allergies are severe and can be deadly. Most schools (and airlines for that matter) take it very seriously.
I did not know schools asked parents to do that.
But in essence how can you stop other people from eating peanuts? Anywhere?
Don't get me wrong, I really feel for this child and his allergies. Not all schools so that though, only some, there are "nut free" schools like Little Red in the city.

You know, I've wondered why so many airlines still offer peanuts. Their reasoning is flawed--they could offer some other snack, it doesn't have to be peanuts.

You can't, but I imagine, the parents have to be extra cautious on an airplaine, b/c it is an enclosed space & you can't exactly rush the kid to the hospital if need be.
I'm surprised planes still serve peanuts. For a while I only ever saw pretzels, which I think would be cheaper for the airline anyway.
I thought of this too. DH and I fly JetBlue when we go on trips, and they serve all different types of snacks, but I don't think peanuts is one of them. It seems like a good idea since it's such a common food allergy for other airlines to follow JetBlue and offer different types of snacks.

And he will probably never be able to attend a Yankee game. Currently there is only one MLB team with "peanut free" games. I think it is the Texas Rangers.

Re: Family sues AA for selling peanuts in the plane
so here's the problem from my perspective:
there are many people with debilitating health problems who need their environment modified. Public facilites cannot be expected to accommodate all of these people's specific needs! Frankly, it is impossible for an airline to garantee a peanut free flight... becuase prior/current passengers can bring the nuts on board... stray nuts could be stuck between cushions. I hate to say it, but the burdon remains with the family.
I had a seizure disorder for over a decade. Strobe lights (or anything that flashed) was a major threat.... as was caffeine, alcohol, along with foods I have allergies to....
Sounds easy to avoid strobes, right? just don't go into night clubs.... wrong! they pop up EVERYWHERE. Traffic lights (ex, at the end of nothern state), certain shop displays on the street and in malls.... I realized the world couldn't be modified for my needs. I adapted the best I could to avoid those things.
Peanut allergies are horrible and potentially lethal... and I agree with schools trying to minimize peanut exposure, but there frankly are no garantees, and this family is asking too much. If it were me, I'd be driving everywhere in my own peanut-free car.

I have yet to hear of an entire school around here that doesn't allow nuts other than a preschool/daycare. They typically have nut free tables in the cafeteria that the allergic chilldren sit at. If my child had a severe allergy, I personally would homeschool.

I think you said it perfectly.
I do feel sorry for people who have allergies, or seizures but we have to be a bit realistic also.
Our daycare was peanut free. Yet, there is no guarantee another child will not eat a PBJ before coming to school, have leftover on his shirt, wipe himself with his hand and touch a toy. That's the reality of it.
