So many inconvenient truths. Since you can be afebrile and even asymptomatic and still transmit the highly contagious virus, taking temperatres is for optics only.
The truth is that if one case occurs in any reopened school, it will spread and the school will be closed. Until we get a better grip on things, it'll just be a bunch of landmines with horrific collateral damage.
You can open whatever you want. If people don't feel safe, they won't go. And without government support, people will be sick AND impoversihed.
We need to come out of denial. I don't know how this got so politicized or why society seems so influenced by provocative conspiracy theorists, who are the least educated among us.
I still say you are very privileged that you can sit home for a year, all in the name of Covid. There are MANY people who are not as lucky as you. My DH works in Manhattan. The things he tells me- food banks with lines 8 blocks long, and by the time some people get to the front, there is nothing left. And it will only get worse as people lose their businesses, etc. I feel like there are people who will look someone in the eye and say, "i'm sorry you lost your home, your job, your ability to feed your kids, but it was all for the greater good." Nope. Sorry. I am all for doing this into June, I am all for sheltering in place to protect people. But I will never sacrifice my family to save humanity.
Please back off of me personally. You know virtually nothing about me. And if you did, you would feel foolish. Please keep our discussions about issues and back off of people's personal lives.
Forget it, not worth going back & forth with you.

Re: Fauci
NYC First grade teacher here. I am DEVASTATED to not be in my classroom with my kids. I spend 3 hours per DAY doing LIVE instruction with my class on Google Classroom. We do a read aloud, we talk about it, the kids are independently reading and talking about their books with each other. We do writing together, they each have paper and pencils and we are writing TOGETHER. Then they have their math books, and the ones that don't can access it online. The rest of the time I am planning, calling parents, grading work, attending professional development so I can better serve my kids remotely. But I should be laid off???????
I am working harder than I ever have in my LIFE to make sure that my kids are ready for 2nd grade. To the person who said that teachers, "especially elementary" should be laid off?? Shame on you.
I also am a single mom with 3 of my own kids at home and I am teaching them as well. I have never felt such stress. I have some parents complaining that there is too much work and so their kids will skip our live sessions. Those kids are going to fall behind. My administrators tell me to call them, email them, and do whatever I can to keep the kids engaged. And I do NOT work in a wealthy district, I am in the poorest neighborhood of the Bronx.
You think I should be laid off? I am working my a$$ off 12-13 hours a day... This is precisely why I left these boards years ago. I still lurk.. and I opened a new account just to have my say about this.
School NEEDS to re-open in the fall. Students will have to wash their hands constantly and wear masks. There will be no other options. People will get sick. Teachers will get sick. Teachers families will get sick. But we cannot open up any of the economy without schools going first so people can get back to work. I do not want to sacrifice e myself or my family but I also realize the importance of schools. So yes, kids will be forced to wear masks. Those who do not comply will be sent home. Will it be hard to enforce? YES.. but it is necessary to keep everyone healthy.
Edited to add: I am sorry about all the typos,, but reading that there are people who want REFUNDS of their school taxes and people who think that teachers should be laid off makes my blood boil. I am working so darn hard as well as my coworkers to make sure that our students are getting the absolute BEST "distance" education as humanly possible. The venom being spewn at teachers makes me sick.

I am not easily offended. I cannot be offended by someone who knows nothing about me. I just think that personal attacks and trying to publicize what you think are details about someone's life in the course of a discussion or debate comes off as...
If someone says they are opposed to reopening and they are in danger if being sent back to work, they get called self interested. If they are able to work from home, they get called callous. I prefer not to call people anything or to attack them, but to deal in and with truths and stick to issues.

I agree, schools ABSOLUTELY need to open in the fall. I think most teachers are busting their a$$, my kids teachers included. The unfortunate part, which is why we need schools to reopen in the fall, is that no matter how hard the teachers work remote learning just isn't the same as children being in the classroom. Especially when you have parents at home that aren't engaged, kids in low income areas and those families who cannot afford the technology for every kid in the household. I think most every teacher, parent and kid are doing the best they can but this isn't sustainable and I sure hope that the powers that be recognize that before they flippantly make a decision down the line to keep schools closed.
This entire situation sucks!

I said it. And I said it about MY district. I don't know you and you definitely don't know me. MY teachers are doing NO live instruction. I get one, maybe two emails a week with LINKS. Freaking youtube links. I am doing the "teaching".
Good for you for accepting and supporting the fact that schools must reopen fully in September. THAT WAS MY WHOLE POINT!
For any of the teachers in MY district who are happily copying and pasting links all day and want it continue this way because they alone deserve the right to stay safely alone inside their homes, THEY are no longer earning their paychecks. I see no need to have 5 or 6 third grade teachers emailing the same thing every week. Two can do that same work.
That's all.
I LOVE teachers and up until now I have adored all of my children's teachers. But enough is enough.

You need to take this up with your kids teachers and administrators then. Because we are under contractual obligation to TEACH our students. We have NYS standards and thats our job. If your district is allowing teachers to send out YouTube videos with ZERO actual instruction, that is wrong. We were told that we are ALLOWED to record ourselves teaching and that we can send out YouTube videos of OURSELVES teaching OR we have the choice to live teach. I personally am not comfortable recording myself, which is why I spend my days on live video with my kids. But sending out random videos? What district are you in that this is permitted? I would be calling and emailing the principal and the board of education.
My own kids are being sent videos of their teachers teaching, then they have work to submit and quizzes and tests. Only one of my sons teachers is going "live". The reason being they are in middle school and high school, so to schedule LIVE sessions is difficult with so many kids and teachers. So they pre-record themselves so the kids can participate on their own time. Honestly if your district is that bad, I would be complaining and calling them out publicly.

I think that the amount of instruction you are doing is not the norm. Our district now requires the teachers to zoom 1 hour a day, 4 days a week. The kids are basically getting friday off. The rest is links to dittos, you tube videos and other web based assigments. If this one hour a day zoom and the links to things is working harder than they were in school then I'm a monkey's uncle. Everyone's situation is different but there really is no need to pay 11 second grade teachers in our district to do this. Not to mention the kids are barely learning anything on the zoom - it's basically just social hour. So yes, if this continues into next year I would be all for eliminating the zoom sessions and have the district furlough the teachers and I can do it myself. Keep in mind, none of these parents can go back to work so we are all in the same boat - everyone getting furloughed. But the state will soon realize they can not pay unemployment to everyone and their brother so that all of the state's children can continue to be homeschooled, and this is when Every Life Matters will change to Education Matters, the Economy Matters, etc. Some people will get sick, some people will die. This will be our new normal. Everyone hiding in their houses WILL NOT be the new norm because the great majority of people will not stand for it.

I think with us being in lockdown since March 22nd, people on both sides are beginning to lose their minds- understandable. But are we comparing people not liking the invention of the toilet to not allowing people to earn a living and feed their families? That was like the Anne Frank comparison that was tossed around on here two weeks ago. People not working & children not going to school, no physical contact with friends & family, for an indefinite amount of time, cannot be compared to the invention of the toilet.
This!
Sorry, but it doesn't relate to the Anne Frank situation that happened here the other day. We have been in quarantine for two months. We will get out with the necessary steps. That was the comparison. It isn't going to be a permanent solution for COVID. They are working it out now.
If anything, I'd blame the government, not just Trump at this point, but recent history of the last thirty years, for not having enough social systems in place during emergency times. The health system sucks, the unemployment sucks, etc. But all people can do is sit there and argue. Perhaps if more taxes (and better proposals put into place without hidden clauses) had been paid for actually getting programs in place, this wouldn't have happened to a major super power. But there is no working together in Congress. The party line is so divided that it's going to be a major problem for the US. And don't expect them to work out something (program wise) now. It's too late. This is the best they can do.

Re: Fauci
I am way behind so i wont quote everyone.
Some teachers are actually working doing live classes, pre recorded lessons etc but reality is a lot are not!!!
Just like in every profession you have some really go people in them and some not so really good ones.
So no one should be surprised or get their panties in a twist when they say the way some teachers are performing during this is disgraceful cause it is.
If its not the teachers fault fine make that public and tell me who it is and I will blame them.
I wrote to my superintendent telling him how disappointed I am in the way this has been handled and surprise surprise no response!

Also i cant believe anyone thinks its realistic for elementary school kids to wear masks all day.
All teachers will be doing is telling them to stop playing with them and they probably wouldn't be effective because the little kids will not keep them on correctly and will be touching their face all day!

masks in schools and in our everyday lives isn't sustainable.
Why not? I mean, truly why not? In China many people wear masks all day every day because the pollution is so bad you can't breathe. So, why can't Americans wear masks when they are around other people to slow the spread of a deadly disease?
Yes, they are difficult to breathe through - that frankly is the point. That said, the more you use it, the easier it is to use. I struggle when I first put it on before exiting my car, but by the time I get to the door of the supermarket, I'm fine.
If wearing a mask whenever you're around other people is what it takes to get everything up and running, then again, why not?

you said many people wear masks not everyone and so I assume they dont have too.
I will also assume in school they are not wearing it all day!!
I am ok dealing with it for the couple of months but not forever!

I did publicly call out my district for the complete and utter lack of live (or even video) lessons, as did a bunch of other parents. My child has had zero interaction with any teacher or classmate since this started.
You know what happened? The superintendent sent out a robo call to justify why there is no live or video lessons. That was the response. The school heard us parents loud and clear, and then called us and said it's not happening, it's not going to happen, the state said we don't have to make it happen, we're not going to make it happen, we're happy with what we are doing, and you had just better get used to it.
I truly wish I could send your original post to our superintendent to show her that even a poor district in the Bronx is getting better service than us.

I would be so pissed and blow up the district on social media sites and in public forums and then see their responds!!
Unacceptable and then people wonder why parents are complaining and saying teachers are doing nothing!!!
I wrote to my superintendent last week still have not hear back about to follow up again!

With that logic, then people that are childfree or no longer have children living in the district should get all their taxes they have paid back. They definitely aren’t getting their money’s worth! Everyone makes choices and those choices usually aren’t something you can pick and choose and decide you want your money back.
Obviously the taxes you are paying aren’t enough as that shows in the crisis that is happening now.

i think you missed the point but in reality it does suck to be childfree and have to pay school taxes.
what you quoted me saying is that you shouldnt take a public job where the public pays your salary and expect them to complain that they arent getting their moneys worth ... how does my logic not make sense ... people are going to complain they need to be able to handle it!
and clearly we are paying enough but some districts and/or teachers dont care and are not putting in the effort.

No, I didn’t miss THE point. Perhaps I missed your point which makes sense to you?
You aren’t paying enough taxes if you have a health system and unemployment in shambles. And don’t let some bad teachers not doing what you think is a bad job spoil it for others that do a good job. So what lay them off and then they become more of a burden on society? Take away the taxes and that will affect the neighbourhood in other ways. Everyone gets different benefits to the taxes they pay. You won’t get them all and I think it’s kind of ridiculous to complain after ONLY two months that you want taxes back in a CRISIS.
I’m sure most people are not performing at full capacity right now. And fully opening the system flattened curve or not is not the answer. It will just create more problems. It needs TIME. And two months is nothing in the grand scheme of things.

You clearly do not grasp the concept of a public school system if you don't understand why people will complain if they feel that their tax dollars are being wasted on a system that is not working. People who are childfree should be just as involved and actively concerned about the state of the education system. I am shocked that as an educator yourself you don't understand why people are demanding the best for our children, especially considering how much we, as a society, put into the education system.

I just want to point out that on Long Island we do not just pay a certain amount in taxes and then the government decides how to allocate the taxes. We pay a specific amount of SCHOOL taxes every year. And every year we have a budget vote to determine if the community approves the school budget for the following year. Because this money is specifically allocated to the schools the community does have a say in how it is spent. I am not sure how it works in Germany, but that is how it works here. School taxes have nothing to do with the health system in shambles or unemployment. That is why people feel they have a right to complain if they feel that the school and it's administration have not put their tax dollars to the best use.

As an educator I understand completely fine. I also understand that some things are impossible in this CRISIS. The teachers are doing the best they can, and saying that they should be laid off is kind of disgusting.
Our taxes are bundled together with a budget for what gets what for things like schools, universities, transport, unemployment, etc. The TV tax and car tax are separate, and possibly real estate not sure. Are you saying that you pay a separate school tax? If so, that’s pretty dumb and another reason why the tax system isn’t enough in the US.

thank you for this explination
and klingklang77 when did i say anyone should be laid off.
i said teachers should expect the public to complain when they are paying for their salary.
also there is absolutely no reason districts cant have teachers prerecording lessons at a minimum my taxes should be able to cover that!

Yes we 100% on Long Island pay a separate school tax. I can tell you the exact breakdown of what my property taxes were and over $21,000 of it went to the local school tax. Every state is different, but that is how it is done in NY.
And btw not all teachers are doing the best that they can. Not all administrations are doing the best they can. Why does everyone think that because you are a teacher you are working harder than anyone else and you deserve some kind of medal? It's such a strange mentality. Teachers on Long Island are paid very well for the job that they do. No one can say that they are disrespected by the amount of compensation they receive. I wouldn't want to do what they do, that's why I didn't become a teacher. Of course there some standouts that are truly amazing but my kids have had a lot of teachers that were clearly just there for the summers off, benefits, and compensation. I'm working my a** off right now trying to balance my job, homeschool, cooking, cleaning etc. I don't think I deserve any kind of special recognition.
