Healthcare workers wear masks all day.
I don’t know, if my options are school with mask or no school, I’m voting mask.
Thank you. That was exactly my point. I hear everyone saying that their kids have to go back to school in the fall and they do not want under any circumstance for their to be distance learning again. Well masks are the only solution for that and commonly used in many other countries - for yes even elementary school children. People seem so entitled for the 'normal' sometimes but then don't want to make any sacrifices until they are pushed up against the wall.
Listen they can make them wear masks if that makes them feel better, but I'm just saying- unless a teacher can be on top of 25 kids all at once, all day long, it won't be very effective. Kids Touching them, adjusting them, taking them off, etc Then lunch. Then snacks. Then they have to take them off to drink water- and my DD drinks water all day long. Then the kids with sensory issues who will be throwing fits and tantrums with them on It sounds good on paper- the practice isn't going to be so easy. But yeah, if she can go back to school- i'll send her with a mask. What happens after that... who knows
What will happen is the parents will get emails about their kids not wearing masks, losing masks, forgetting to put them back on and it’s going to be our fault like we have control over the situation.
I yell at my son everyday to put his mask on before he leaves the house to walk the dog. Mind you this kid walks the dog like 3x a day and still forgets. He loses them despite me telling him to put it in his jacket pocket.
Can you imagine him in school? Kid can’t even remember to bring a math book from one class to the other. Good luck with him at school!!!
And the teacher emailing you also has no control over the situation either! When does your responsibility happen? You want a teacher to teach, watch every kid wash their hands multiple times a day, make sure they don’t put things in their mouth, stay socially distant and keep a mask on.
And what will parents do if school is part time? That going to be on each person to figure it out unfortunately. Some will hire babysitters, some will leave kids with neighbors or family. Who knows? If we had answers we would all be on the damn task force figuring it out. I just think it’s crazy to think that September will be normal as it usually is. We are in a new normal and we either figure it out and adapt to it or we don’t.
I agree. This is a new normal. You are just going to have to get used to it somehow. Things will NEVER go back to the way they were. It's the same way we had to change after 9/11.
And it sucks. It really does. I have my moments, too. But in order to survive, I have to remember that everybody else is going through this, too. I'll have to change my habits. Yes, every situation is different, but our whole lives have been uprooted. I guess acceptance is just going to happen to people at different times. But it will never return to the way it was.
Let me make this clear, I have no problems with teachers emailing me. If anything that isn’t new, its my actual normal. Even now I get emails, my son is just that special. What’s another email in my inbox.
All I was doing is pointing out the obvious fact of what will happen when kids aren’t complying with the masks. We will get emails. Which is more work for the teachers and really not much a parent can control at home. I’m not feeling bad for me, I feel bad for the teachers.

I wonder if the schools will offer some kind of childcare (for a fee of course) for the off days/hours the kids are not in the classroom. Or maybe daycares will allow older kids. I am a working parent so I will be in this predicament myself. I was really looking forward to no longer having a daycare bill but I guess we will continue to have that expense in addition to paying school taxes.
This is my issue, my son can’t stay in class full time but I can supplement him being in aftercare/daycare situation for the extra 4hrs? Then what’s the point?
Keep him in class and save me the extra money. How is that any safer? I guess because it means less kids in aftercare than would be in the class. But how much less? I just don’t understand how the half days or rotating schedule will work.
People on here have issues with half day pre-k/kindergarten. How will this work for all grades?

I totally agree. It makes no sense but there has to be some plan for us working parents other than “ find a neighbor”. Give me a break.

People are going to need to get babysitters or work with family and neighbors to watch their kids I guess. Everyone will have to figure out childcare just like they did before kids were of school age.
It’s easier to find someone to watch your little kids all day. It’s hard to find someone to watch your kid half day and have to pick them up from school. Trust me. It’s the reason why I use aftercare and work remote on days he has half day with no aftercare. It’s not easy to find someone who can pick your kid up in the middle of the day, and it also has to be someone not only you trust driving your kid but actually has a car to pick them up.
And not everyone has family that can help. I certainly don’t.
Plus, isn't part of this entire thing to stay away from people who do not live in your house? So, it won't be safe for children to return to school, but it will be safe for everyone to return to work and grandparents to start being with their grandchildren again? Plus, I don't know many extended family members who would be willing to be full time teacher for grandchildren/nieces/nephews. And like others said, to hire a babysitter/tutor will be an expense many can't afford, even under the best of circumstances.

I just have to accept it. I have no other choice. It's the reality of the situation. I can't have hope because I don't want to be led to false hope and then be let down even more. Maybe I'm a pessimist, but I have had so many bad things happen to me that it just starts to not affect me too much.
The best thing I can do for myself is just look at what the reality of the situation is and do the best I can with that situation. I guess, maybe, that's somewhat optimistic?

Okay maybe that is true at this moment, but how can you be so sure that:
1. There will never be medical treatments? 2. There will never be a magical vaccine? 3. The virus won’t eventually dissipate and not be a threat (like SARS did years ago) 4. We will never reach herd immunity?
Are you saying these things can never happen?

However I think that people will still be cautious about certain things for a while even if all these things happen tomorrow. So no things will not be what our normal was in January or February- it Doesn’t mean that your kids future are doomed forever

Just because covid 19 might pass, the ramifications will be long lasting. we don't want to endure a new pandemic, because there will always be a new virus. which is why the new normal will emerge.

Yes and no.
I think there will be some sort of medical treatment.
I don't think there will be a magical vaccine any time soon, if ever.
Very few infectious human diseases have been eradicated. SARS comes up every now and then. I don't think there has been a corona type virus that has a vaccine or been completely eradicated.
Herd immunity might happen. Can't say at this point. Too soon to tell.

Wow when you put it like that! That’s it??? That’s so simple. Why didn’t we all think of that? I’ll just go into my magic bank account and pay for someone (who? I don’t know) to teach and care for my children on a rotating schedule indefinitely.
Thank you for this helpful suggestion. All the working parents are grateful that you’ve solved our problem.

I guess it depends what people consider the “new normal.” Like after 9/11 now we have so much more security requirements at airports. Annoying, but worth it and ultimately it does not prevent you from traveling. But if the post-Covid normal means wearing masks for the rest of our lives, never having a sporting event again, homeschooling forever, and not being able to hug and kiss your family, then no, that is not an acceptable new normal.

Re: Fauci
One of the things on that list above will surely happen. But it's only been a few weeks. We need to learn from history. The 1918 flu, polio, smallpox, sars, etc. Nothing terrorizes society forever. But things take time. And when people change their containment strategy with no factual predicate for change other than that they're over it, you get th ed new wave, the spike, the bodies piling up, etc.
What I can't wrap my head around is the foot stomping of people who say they're over it and must get out, but take issue with masks, the one thing that might help them out there until something on the list happens.
It's a recipe for disaster. The combo of let me out but don't make me take precaution couldn't spell out doom more clearly if it had been planted in our society by enemy bots.
And if the masks cause that much trauma, then maybe those who can't tolerate them are like the immunocompromised in that they need to stay in when others go out because they are not fit to function the way the new world needs us to function until something on the list happens.

I don't know about you, but I quite like my toilet. There were people out there that were probably against them because, you know, who wants to $hit and waste water, I can't afford it, blah blah.

I think with us being in lockdown since March 22nd, people on both sides are beginning to lose their minds- understandable. But are we comparing people not liking the invention of the toilet to not allowing people to earn a living and feed their families? That was like the Anne Frank comparison that was tossed around on here two weeks ago. People not working & children not going to school, no physical contact with friends & family, for an indefinite amount of time, cannot be compared to the invention of the toilet.

True. I don't think the masks will be forever (I see that only being for one year). But they might take every child's temperature when they walk into school and be more strict about when kids are sick how soon they can come back to school, etc. etc. So it may not prevent another one, but it would make it WAY less likely. and if we took precautionary measures sooner, any outbreaks will be smaller and less detrimental. prevention is the key to anything. I don't think anyone is planning to homeschool forever or not kiss their family members. That is very extreme.

The first ones did. They didn't quite know about them until they were able to probably get the seals in container and then water supply was threatened. Then they have got it right for the most part in western cultures.
But don't be fooled and let your privilege come out. In many parts of the world (poor countries) there aren't proper toilets and they still have outbreaks of Cholera, etc.
This is the new normal and we have to work out how to live with it.

So many inconvenient truths. Since you can be afebrile and even asymptomatic and still transmit the highly contagious virus, taking temperatres is for optics only.
The truth is that if one case occurs in any reopened school, it will spread and the school will be closed. Until we get a better grip on things, it'll just be a bunch of landmines with horrific collateral damage.
You can open whatever you want. If people don't feel safe, they won't go. And without government support, people will be sick AND impoversihed.
We need to come out of denial. I don't know how this got so politicized or why society seems so influenced by provocative conspiracy theorists, who are the least educated among us.

I still say you are very privileged that you can sit home for a year, all in the name of Covid. There are MANY people who are not as lucky as you. My DH works in Manhattan. The things he tells me- food banks with lines 8 blocks long, and by the time some people get to the front, there is nothing left. And it will only get worse as people lose their businesses, etc. I feel like there are people who will look someone in the eye and say, "i'm sorry you lost your home, your job, your ability to feed your kids, but it was all for the greater good." Nope. Sorry. I am all for doing this into June, I am all for sheltering in place to protect people. But I will never sacrifice my family to save humanity.

Agreed. And again for a virus with a very high survival rate. That is what I am not understanding. I'm truly truly mind boggled.
