Also, keep in mind that most cruise lines have a certain theme, or clientele in mind. We didn't want to do a Disney cruise because DC thought it was too young for them, and DW and I didn't want to have a Disney-focused ship and activities.
My mom loves Holland America (I think she's been on the ships more than some of the captains! ). However, that line is great for her, since it's geared towards older passengers without kids. That wouldn't really work for us, though.
How do you find out themes? Google?
Just google cruise activities for the line you are looking for. Then the daily itineraries come up with all of the activities planned. When I was searching, many didn't have a whole lot for kids, or families as a whole, so you can tell they are more geared toward adults, so that is when I nixed them.

P.S, many of the activities for kids on a Disney cruise, aren't even all that "Disney focused". In the kids club, my daughter has....made flubber, raced a car out of soap that they carved themselves, baked cookies and cupcakes, made straw houses out of spaghetti to knock over, we as a family have played bingo, learned how to fold washcloths into weird animals, raced cars made out of vegetables, played trivia games and game shows, had dance parties, and an abundance of other awesome activities. I can see how some kids might not be interested in that, but it's definitely not ALL Disney stuff, all the time.
Fair enough. The things you listed though, aren't our speed. On our last cruise, we were on bumper cars, rock wall climbing, did a skydiving simulator (the one with the huge fan in the floor so it as the effect of sky diving), etc.
That's why there's so many cruise lines. Something for everyone.

That sounds fun too! But we would all chicken out

Re: Favorite cruise lines
I've done RCL and Carnival. Of the two, I much prefer Royal Caribbean.

Royal is family friendly and geared towards that. Celebrity is one step above royal and is a little more adult "themed". Holland is for older people, and sometimes Princess is depending on itinerary. Carnival is usually the cheapest, and personally - I don't like it because it was more college kids, spring break vibe. Disney is obviously geared towards kids and Disney themed. Norwegian is pretty much the same as Royal.
I believe that's what PP was referring to.
I love royal and celebrity, with princess a close third. I've been on almost 30 cruises.

Royal Caribbean is also geared toward the "active: traveler. ( rock climbing walls, etc.) and this is more obvious on the larger ships.
Disney is supposed to be very good if you have children with special needs /special diets.
Celebrity & Princess were pretty similar to me, but those of I went on were long European cruises with an older crowd. the Royal Caribbean one in the Caribbean were more lively & fun.
I would think Royal Caribbean would be good for you. Are you looking for one that leaves from NY/NJ Or would you fly? Some cruises leave from San Juan.
Also, non-potty trained children can't go int eh pools, but some ships have splash areas the little kids can play in. I think Disney almost always has them, but the newer, bigger ships on the other lines have them too, I think.

Favorite cruise lines
Royal Caribbean has babysitting services for kids under 3 for a fee. That came in handy with our then 18 month old. We're going on ncl in a few weeks and they don't have babysitting so our almost 2 year old (will be 2 on the cruise) will be with us 24/7.

Re: Favorite cruise lines
I been on RCL, NCL and carnival. I wouldn't do Carnival again after doing the other two.
I've don't RCL childless and with children and had a great time. They had a dreamworks theme and you could meet character from shrek and had parades for the kids. I think it was Oasis (gorgeous boat). I've been on three of their boats.
NCL was another good cruise to Bermuda, they had Nickleodeon theme characters. The food was great.
I would do either of them again. Carnival is better for young people who want to party hard, just because the dance clubs are a lot better. But I only went once on it.
