my office isn't releasing any details until it happens - they won't even tell us who is essential and non-essential - it's such BS

I havent paid much attention to the news lately
What is the reasoning behind them wanting to shut down? I feel so dumb asking.

This is not about the President's policies, it's about both sides of Congress not being able to come to an agreement.
People will get paid, the only problem is that essential workers will have to wait to get paid and non-essential workers won't get paid for the time that they were told to stay home.
As far as tax refunds, if you are due a refund, you will get it, but it will take a little while longer since IRS employees won't be at their jobs.
This is all, of course, if they don't come to an agreement by Saturday.

Re: Feds....looks like it could really be happening this time.
DH has been told already that if it happens he is definitely on furlough.
In my department no one can give us a straight answer yet if we are essential or not...and no one really at all has talked about it and no emails have gone out about it either.

Re: Feds....looks like it could really be happening this time.
This is just all crazy and it'll affect so many people..
I wish more would be like West Virginia Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin.
"He has pledged to give up his salary if the government shuts down, and sent a letter to his fellow senators Thursday to do the same. Similar legislation asking those in Congress to give up their salaries in a shutdown previously failed. "

My friends husband is in the military and she just sent me a message on FB saying that they WILL be getting paid, technically. They will just have to wait for their paycheck until the budget passes. BUT

Re: Feds....looks like it could really be happening this time.
Posted by CathyB The problem is that the people who cut the paychecks may not be working and that's why it would be late. For example, my dad is a civilian working for the Air Force, and part of his job is to oversee the system that pays some of the troops. If he and his colleagues are told not to come to work and the system goes down, those payees are out of luck.
Thanks for explaining. makes sense, but definitely sucks!!!

Re: Feds....looks like it could really be happening this time.
Ugh.. this is such bad timing for us, we're both Feds and just bought a house and have to write a HUUGGEE check to the builder this weekend. Thank God we have some savings, but it still STINKS.
We were told if we're furloughed we have to come in for four hours on Monday to close loose ends, bring laptops in, etc. Our whole agency is non-essential.
I would have been thrilled about this 10 years ago when I didn't have a mortgage or a baby.... I would have probably drank the furlough away with other Feds.. but having it while an adult Suucckkkss!!

Posted by CathyB Meanwhile the politicians will still be getting their paychecks.
This was my first thought yesterday. Take their paychecks away for every day they can't come to a decision...I bet they'll amazingly have the solutions asap. If you're not doing your job, you don't deserve to get paid.

Re: Feds....looks like it could really be happening this time.
I truly don't understand what the hellll is so hard about all of this. If everyone in government would just keep in mind the ideals our country were founded on - ya know, the greater good, democracy, equal rights for all, liberty - if they just thought about those, instead of their own damn back room interests, there would be no problems.

The last time this happened was 1995 and it lasted 5 days. I hope if it does happen, it's much shorter than that!

My position was considered essential during the last furlough so I may have to come in and then get paid who knows when?
It is disgusting. Is there a way to remind these politicians that they are playing with our LIVES here and not official looking pieces of paper?!

Re: Feds....looks like it could really be happening this time.
most Hill offices are still figuring out what they are doing. we've been told all of the technical points of the law: you are 'excepted' if your job duties are in support of a constitutional obligation, protection of life or property, or to assist with the orderly shutdown of your office/agency.
if you are excepted/'essential', you will be paid for any time you work during the shutdown, but after they agree to a funding resolution. depending on your agency's pay schedule, you will receive a check for days worked up to 11:59pm Friday, and if you come in on Monday for a shutdown meeting, you'll get paid for Monday as well.
At this point though, the entire debate is over the policy riders that the house attached to the funding resolution. the number of cuts and overall budget numbers are no longer in contention. this has everything to do with the policy riders that cut funding to planned parenthood, npr and other restrictive language that are not normally part of an appropriations bill.
at this point, unless speaker boehner waives the house's 72 hr rule (the house requires that all bills be posted to their website 72 hrs ahead of a vote), they will shut down for some period of time. if i had to guess, they get an agreement by next thursday and we're back up and running the following monday.
the entire thing stinks. i'm just glad we did our taxes early this year and got our refund already.

Re: Feds....looks like it could really be happening this time.
Just checked my email already this morning and the same cryptic messages. Nothing concrete in writing who exactly is essential or not.
As far as I was told my office is not essential so we will be gone until the budget passes, but no "official" word yet. All I got was a notice saying that until we tell you your essential and have to work, do not do anything or turn your laptop on.
Nice, Typical government communication but what can you do, I should be used to it by now.
As far as I know the white house directed all offices to be all hush hush about the details because they were hoping that it didn't come down to this. But now that it has, and there still is nothing in place, they should be communicating more.

I wish that the bill passed that if we're not paid they're not paid. But of course they still get paid while we will not due to their inability to compromise.
Can someone please tell me how passing a federal budget for the governement agencies can hinge on whether or not funding is given to planned parenthood. Are you kidding me that they are playing with our livelihoods to promote their own political agenda. I think that's what angers me the most about this.

Re: Feds....looks like it could really be happening this time.
We got a memo last night clearly explaining our non-essential status - no big suprise for the Dept of Ed, though we'll have a LOT of unhappy customers! I'm waiting this out with baited breath...
