You know what is so f*cked up? My DH's job is considered essential - he's fed law enforcement (customs/border protection) but if the budget doesn't get passed he STILL does not ge paid. Has to go in to work but won't get paid. So we are paying for child care - because he is AWOL if he stays home - but he's not bringing in any money. I am DISGUSTED by these idiots.
Same here LB. We are angry and scared.

Re: Feds....looks like it could really be happening this time.
I am most likely exempted and working. I found this out at a big meeting yesterday, but am waiting for email confirmation.
I will be one of about maybe 10 people in my office trying to carry out our mission.
I cannot believe it actually. I was looking forward to this furlough. we are in a pretty good financial position-better than some of my other coworkers, but b/c I my job status, I MUST work, but I will be paid.
oh, the the person who said it lasted 5 days...that was the first furlough.
there was a second that lasted 3 weeks
the meeting was just so...grim. It was the last thing our Big Guy wanted to say to us.

Re: Feds....looks like it could really be happening this time.
This whole thing is so disgusting. I have lost so much respect for our government. If you watch BBC news, they are practically LAUGHING at us. We as a country look like idiots who just can't get it together. I will most likely still have to go to work and not get paid. Part of the reason I wanted to work for the government was job security. Not feeling so secure anymore. Thanks for nothing, great leaders of our nation.

Re: Feds....looks like it could really be happening this time.
everyone exempted from the furlough will be paid, it will just be delayed.
the only question is if those that are mandated to furlough will also be paid. that happened last time, and we can only it will happen again.
ETA: I don't mean to sound like people should just "suck it up" and I hope that I don't b/c that is not my intention. I just wanted to make it clear that no one will be made to come in to work and NOT be paid. anyone exempted will be paid eventually.
and eventually is what really sucks.
why can't our govt understand that we have BILLS to pay. mortgages, gas, electric, childcare for mandated employees!!! HELLLOOOO people. this is serious serious stuff!

This means my husband will be working and retro paid, and then having the $hit taxed out of his retro pay. Also couldn't have come at a worse time, we are in the process of finding a house.

our meeting is at 11..... I don't even want to hear what they are going to say. I am trying to hold on to some hope that they will make us go through all this and pass a budget later today!

No necessarily. Historically all employees got paid. However, legally employees who are not working are not entitled to backpay.

I said exempted. if we are exempted that means we are working. anyone exempted from the furlough and reporting to work WILL be paid.
by law, we cannot "volunteer" our services so we will be paid.
sorry for the confusion.

if i had to guess, they get an agreement by next thursday and we're back up and running the following monday.
I agree.. and I think it's more likely we'll get paid if it's a short, one-week furlough. I think if it was a day, they might not pay us to prove a point, if it's weeks and weeks they might not pay us because the numbers will tick off the American public... but if it's a week, it's kind of easier to just let the payrolls continue..
As if my opinion mattered at all in this

I feel bad for one of my best friends who is a federal employee. He's been laid off, and has 2 weeks left of work. He's really depending on this last paycheck which he might not get.
F^&%^%&ing congress. HOW exactly is tis helping people? It's a stunt.

there are certain positions that are excempt from the furlough and therefore will be paid. military is one of them as is some law enforcement (just not my particular agency). thanks GOd.
ETA: I know there was a bill on the floor to have the congress go unpaid as well in the event of a furlough. I can't remember if it ever passed though.
I thought they said something about the military missing a week of pay..and that it's constitutionally mandated that the president and congress get paid in the event of a shutdown. I think the Senate did pass a bill to change it, but I don't think it got through the house.
I wasn't following it that closely because I didn't think it was really going to happen at first

First, He won't be laid off he will be furloughed.
Secondly, no federal employee has been officially notified since the gov't has until midnight to reach a deal.
Most fed workers will be required to report to their place of employment Monday where they will be officially notified in writing.

Re: Feds....looks like it could really be happening this time.
DH is waiting for a meeting at his facility to see whether they will be remaining open, open with a skeleton crew, or closing. Then he will be waiting to see if his function is considered essential.
I am not sure how this will affect him, but it makes me nervous. He is contracted to the Government, and we need every single paycheck to make ends meet right now.

this is not Obama's fault.
Not at all.
The Republicans asked for $33M in cuts. The Tea Party then pushed them to make it $66M. The Dems offered $33M in cutes, which the Republicans refused. They're also debating idealogical nonsense. Obama has been pushing for a resolution.

He was already laid off before this (separate from the shutdown). He's in his last 2 weeks of his job, which ends I think April 21 or something. So if there's a shutdown he loses his last paycheck. He'll just be doubly screwed

Re: Feds....looks like it could really be happening this time.
I have been listening to the debates between the house and senate all morning. There is a lot of blame going around on both sides.
Republicans saying Democrats failed by not passing budget last year and then failing to approve a stop gap measure to extend it another week or make reasonable cuts
Democrats saying Republicans are holding this up over planned parenthood funding, which is beyond the scope of what should be focused on.

no, military WILL be paid, just not on time. any paychecks issued that include time served up to today will be prorated and then when we get funding, we get paid for any work performed during the shut down.
i don't know when the military's paycycle is so hard to say to the penny what they will see.
for us here in the US Senate, our pay period runs 4/1-15. So, if there is no agreement prior to the 15th, the check we receive on the 20th will be for 4/1-8. Anyone who is not furloughed and has to work during any period of the shutdown will be paid (by law, they must be paid b/c they have worked) but will be paid for that time after the funding has been restored.
hope that makes sense.

It's bullshirt IMO because the Republicans were threatening a fillibuster at the end of the year on the budget.
ETA: WHo cares who failed. It's their job to get it together now.
