I have been listening to the debates between the house and senate all morning. There is a lot of blame going around on both sides.
Republicans saying Democrats failed by not passing budget last year and then failing to approve a stop gap measure to extend it another week or make reasonable cuts
Democrats saying Republicans are holding this up over planned parenthood funding, which is beyond the scope of what should be focused on.
It's bullshirt IMO because the Republicans were threatening a fillibuster at the end of the year on the budget.
Oh I didnt say I fully believed either side, but I find it almost... sadly hilarious... that neither side is actually saying anything in debate to help close the gap (tho Dems have agreed to the original number of cuts, but now the republicans wont agree) its a blame game

Re: Feds....looks like it could really be happening this time.
What I dont get is... ok, they want to cut the budget to save money.
Yet the one week extensions cost more than passing a full year budget.
also, if the government shuts down and 800.000 to 1.9 million are furloughed, Think of the income that would be lost between the parks and federal tourist spots being shut down, which in turn affects the local workers at the hotels, restaurants, gas stations. People wont get paid because they cant go to work....
How much tax revenue will be lost because of a pi$$ing match

its not. As much as I want to one day go into politics, this is becoming an ideological pi$$ing match where Boehner has to be very careful, as if he sides with Democrats he is a traitor to his party, if he sides with republicans he becomes one of hte most hated men in america

Yeah, but I feel like in reality, if he would come to a compromise and help the American people he's supposed to be serving, then he'd actually be a much stronger leader.
Unfortunately our politics is driven by our media.

Re: Feds....looks like it could really be happening this time.
We were told that we are considered essential and we have to come in, business as usual, on Monday no matter what.
Our pay MAY be delayed, depending on how long we go in a furlough. All leave is canceled to if you don't show up, you don't get paid.
So grateful, for everyone affected by the shutdown!!!

and in some sort of bizarro twist, I just found out that at some point this year my designation changed fiscally, so I am now on furlough again.

Re: Feds....looks like it could really be happening this time.
Just spoke with DH and he said his agency told them that his position is considered essential which they were told would probably be the case. He prob still wont be getting paid until it's resolved. He said you are almost better off being one of the people being told to not report because historically those people have gotten back pay so it's like getting a paid vacation. Considering most will be in the same boat with the pay situation, whether you are working or not, I would much rather get a paid vaca. Best of luck to everyone and I just hope this is resolved ASAP.

I truly don't understand what the hellll is so hard about all of this. If everyone in government would just keep in mind the ideals our country were founded on - ya know, the greater good, democracy, equal rights for all, liberty - if they just thought about those, instead of their own damn back room interests, there would be no problems.
ITA selfish bastards!

Re: Feds....looks like it could really be happening this time.
From the Hill
Reid will introduce a last-ditch stopgap to avert shutdown By Alexander Bolton - 04/08/11 10:38 AM ET Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said he will introduce a week-long stopgap spending measure on Friday in a last-ditch attempt to avert a government shutdown.
Reid told reporters Friday morning that negotiations with Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) broke down over one issue: a policy rider defunding Planned Parenthood.
Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) said the legislation would include an “emergency contingency pot” to fund U.S. troops involved in the conflicts in Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya. The bill, however, would not fund the full Defense Department through the rest of fiscal year 2011.
Reid said he and Boehner agreed to $38 billion in spending cuts for the rest of the fiscal year, $5 billion more than the target Senate and House appropriators were working toward earlier this week. Reid said disputes over every other policy rider were solved after late-night discussions at the White House Thursday.
Funding for Planned Parenthood and Title X was the one outstanding issue Friday morning.
“The number had been agreed on, the only issue left was women’s health, Title X, that’s it. There was no other issue,” Reid said. “I want an agreement but this has been a moving target. But now we have come to realize the moving target is now focused [like] a bull’s-eye on women in America.
“We are not bending on women’s health,” he said.
Republicans on Friday have insisted there is no deal, and that the size of the spending cuts is the sticking point.
Legislation approved by the House would eliminate funding for all of Title X, which does not pay for abortions. Title X last year received $317 million, with $75 million of those funds going to Planned Parenthood affiliates.

That is disgusting - especially because I'm sure our elected officials are getting their FULL pay.
We need to change the laws regarding their pay and compensation....

I'm honestly not trying to be snarky, but why would he have only received half of his check when nothing has happened yet?

They are actually saying that if a Govt shutdown occurs this time, odds are Congress will not vote to provide back pay to those who are on furlough.
