feeling sad.. nursing related
after a month of tricky and bumpy nursing DH and I finally agreed that it was time for me to stop and turn to formula. DD did not latch on well from the start but had it down after about a week.. I was in sever pain the first 2 weeks to the point where i was hospitalized and put on severe pain medicine... cramping from nursing. Then we started to suppliment because DD was sooooo hungry .. I was feeding for an hour and then 20 minutes later she was crying because she was still hungry. and when I was pumping I was not getting more then 2 ounces at a time out of each side if that so we realized that it wasn't filling her. Because we were supplimenting so early my supply started to diminish more and more and now my excema is back really bad and the only medicine that I can take for it I cannot nurse with so after 5 weeks i'm stopping. It really hit me today because I have not nursed her at all since last night and I'm a little depressed. Sorry so long just needed to share my feelings with someone. I was planning on nursing for 6 months at least and now I feel sad that we had to switch over to just formula.

Re: feeling sad.. nursing related
tiffany, your baby has a terrific start! You did a wonderful job!
It seems like by giving up BFing, you may be able to be at ease with your baby now and just be able to enjoy her instead of dealing with BFing issues.
It sounds like you are such a trooper. Your baby knows all the hard work you did.
Now, enjoy her in a different, less stressed way.

Re: feeling sad.. nursing related
I just feel like I'm giving up too soon and I really had just started to get the hang of it ... I'm still feeding DD it just isn't the same as nursing. This morning when I picked her up and she was hungry she automatically turned her little head towards my breast and I wanted to cry. Not to mention we did not factor into our income formula being as I was going to BF for at least 6 months and its sooooo expensive that now we have to redo our budget. Just depressed about giving up something so important to my daughter.

Breastfeeding is so hard and alot of work. You gave your baby a wonderful start in this world, don't be so hard on yourself! You need to get your eczema under control. That's very important. Hang in there....

Re: feeling sad.. nursing related
I had to stop after only three weeks, and it literally broke my heart. I still get upset thinking about it, and my baby is 10 months old! So I know what you're feeling! Even though our bodies are supposed to be equipped to breastfeed, nothing is perfect and sometimes, we just can't. It has nothing to do with you and your ability to be a mother! In fact, you're a great mother because you realized she wasn't getting enough from you, and you made sure she was fed anyway! It will be hard emotionally, but you will feel better once you make the decision to stop. It's very stressful to try to breastfeed and be unsuccessful - especially for an extended period of time!

Re: feeling sad.. nursing related
I went through something very similar. I could NOT satisfy DD but I felt so sad and guilty when I started to wean her. She got her first bottle of formula the day she turned 1 month old. I weaned her slowly, for about 6 weeks... and I actually had decided that I would continue to nurse her at night and feed her formula during the day, but it just didn't work out.
At the end of the second month I got a stomach virus and I needed to take something otherwise I couldn't take care of DD - but if I took something for it I couldn't nurse DD. That's how we eventually stopped. I felt and still feel so sad sometimes when I give her that bottle but with her issues (she has allergies) and me being back at work now it really is for the best that she's formula fed.
Try not to beat yourself up because you know you did the best that you could. BFing isn't right for everyone!!

Re: feeling sad.. nursing related
thank you for all of your kind words.. I am still feeling a little depressed but I keep reminding myself that DD is doing really well on the formula and it is filling her which is the most important thing so I guess in all honesty it was the best decision but still a painful one. Any suggestions on taking the pain out of my breasts .. they are very soar
