Fence Etiquette

If you were changing your fence, would you tell your neighbor ahead of time to let them know? Assume workers were going to be walking in their yard and the neighbor has plants along the fence even though the actual fence is on your property. Just need to settle a debate.

Re: Fence Etiquette

Yes. We just replaced our fence and we told all neighbors. Actually, one set of neighbors sat outside and watched it going up. They were very upset and I had to manage the crew to make sure that everything was perfect on their side.

Re: Fence Etiquette

Absolutely. What if they are dog-sitting for that day, and with the workers in your yard, with the fence down, their dog could easily get out.

If you're replacing the posts, they will definitely be doing some sort of damage to their property, however minimal.

Re: Fence Etiquette

I'd def want to know and would be outraged if something happened to my "belongings" and i wasnt aware that any workers would be there them... you're better off saying something than not bc these are the people you have to live next door to for many years!

Re: Fence Etiquette

I would let them know.

When we had trees taken down, I told both sets of neighbors so they were aware. Just the neighborly thing to do.

Re: Fence Etiquette

We told all of our neighbors... on both sides of us, we also walked around the block to the neighbor behind us. So yes, we would definitely tell the neighbors.

Re: Fence Etiquette

We actually worked with ours to come to a common agreement and gave them $ for the fence, since there was only one between our yards. For the people bordering the other side, they had their own fence so we didn't say anything. Once ours was up, they took theirs down because it was crappy and ours isn't. Chat Icon

Just be prepared for questions and perhaps opinions, good or bad!

Same. Our neighbor had their own fence up so they wouldn't have been able to work from the other side anyway.

Re: Fence Etiquette

we did ours this past spring... we had a rusty old chainlink and replaced it with a privacy white pvc 6 foot fence. i didn't feel i HAD to tell the neighbors because it was OUR fence, we weren't asking for a penny and it was a HUGE upgrade for them, imo (they didn't have their own fence up, they just "used" ours). but out of courtesy, yes, we told them ahead of time. i left a note in each of our 3 neighbors' mailboxes a week or two ahead of time just saying what was going to be done and on what dates, in case they were planning on company etc and i left my phone number in case there was a problem. no one called, complained, or offered to chip in Chat Icon the workers didn't go in any of their yards anyway.
