Fence Ownership Question
DH and I want to replace an old chain link fence with a PVC one. I do NOT plan to ask the neighbors to chip in. Can I just have this done? Do I need their permission? Do I need to find out who "owns" the original fence?

Fence Ownership Question
Is the old fence on your property or the neighbors? Do you know who put it up?

Fence Ownership Question
We just did this and informed all of neighbors (we have 5) some were a pain and some were easy. We gave them the option of having us take down the fence or put the new one touching. If it's on the fence line I believe you need approval.

I just did this. I put the new fence right alongside the old fence.

Fence Ownership Question
I would find out who owns the fence. If my neighbor had a chain link and then put a PVC next to it cause they didn't know I'd be upset I still had to look at the rusty chain link.

Re: Fence Ownership Question
I think it depends on whose property the chain link is on. If it is yours, Id take it down and install the new. If it is on theirs, i wouldnt worry about it and just put your fence up against it.

Fence Ownership Question
You have to figure out whose property its on. I would talk to the neighbors and tell them what you plan on doing - they may be just as glad to take down the old fence and then there won't be any issues. If the old fence is theirs and they want to leave it up, then just put your new one right next to it.

Re: Fence Ownership Question
look at your property survey. if the entire fence is on you property, you can take it down. If not then approach the neighbors about taking it down, but you don't have to take it down if its on their property. Just put your fence in front of it if is isn't.
we just replaced our back fence last year. Our chain link was against 2 different neighbors. We were removing out chailn link but asked them if they wanted their wood removed at their cost to enjoy the new PVC. They agreed and each paid $70 for their removal (paid us, we paid fence company). We did not ask them to pay for the new fence though, we paid for it. I think they were pretty happy to get a PVC fence for $70

Re: Fence Ownership Question
When we moved in we had an old stockade wood fence that was falling apart. We installed and paid for new PVC fence, didn't even bother asking the neighbors since we just wanted it to get done.
