fence variance?
We are a corner lot and the largest section of yard is considered the side yard. From what I've read I can only have a 4' fence but may be able to get 6' if we apply for a variance. I've seen many homes on the same road my side yard is on with 6' fences. I'm not sure how the variance process works. Am I supposed to tell the town which houses are on the street that have a 6' fence? What if they don't have a permit -- I don't want to have it result in any animosity.

Re: fence variance?
I also have a corner lot and just recently got granted a variance to put up a 6 foot fence on our side yard. You do not have to name any other houses with a 6 foot fence on a corner. You have to go to town hall and submit an application for the fence. You will then get a rejection letter in the mail. Once you are rejected you have to submit another application for a variance to the board of the appeals. You will have to mail a letter to your abutting neighbors telling them about your application and you have to present your case at a hearing. The whole process too us like 4 months. Town hall will explain the whole process to you. Good luck!

This is so helpful, thank you.
We have a corner lot but haven't gone through the variance process, we instead planted arborvitaes, there's no restriction on how tall those can be. So far so good....hoping they grow a foot this year....eventually I'd love to have a 7 foot green wall.

fence variance?
I have a corner and we can only have 4' within x number of feet from the intersection. But can be higher as you go back. I would call the town or go down with a drawing and ask.

are you really sure about that? There are definitely regulations concerning how high you can have plantings when they are close to the corner as they can obstruct visibility. May not be an issue depending on where you planted in relation to the corner, but something to keep in mind.

I'm not right up to the corner, lol. I can't see how someone would do that, but hey- you never know! Our trees along the side of the house stop a good 12 feet or so from the corner on the front side of the street, aligned with our house setback. View for traffic purposes is not obstructed at all.

Re: fence variance?
I live on a corner, we have a 6' fence but, we had the previous owners of the house secure the permit for it since there was none existing, when we bought the house. It is also set back from the sidewalk quite a few feet so it doesn't obstruct the view of people trying to turn from the corner. Although, our neighbor that lives across the street from me (also a corner) is filing for a variance to put his fence more toward the sidewalk to increase his property space (we got a letter in the mail- similar to the process listed above).
