Fetal Echo question?

Has anyone here had a fetal echocardiogram? I'm having one and wondering how long it will take. I have no choice but to bring 18 month old DD. I'm getting really nervous about how this will go. My plan is to bring the stroller and hopefully she'll sit in there and eat cheerios while they do it. I am petrified that she's going to want to run around and have a meltdown becuase she can't. I don't see how I can hold her during a sono. Ugh, I wish I had someone to babysit! DH was planning to come but wound up having a late meeting he has to attend. Chat Icon

I had one with my last pregnancy ... it was pretty long - maybe 30/40 minutes of them strictly examining the heart.

Ugh, this is what I was afraid of! I just cannot believe I have to go to this alone!!! I'm not even being a baby about DH not being that, that doesn't ever bother me, it's the what am I going to do with DD?! I made this apt over a month ago, they only have 2 days a month that they do apts and I'm already at the end of the time frame where they want to do them. Chat Icon

It depends on what you are going for. I had one in August, because they thought LO had a hole in her upper atrium. Since it was a specific location they were examining, it took roughly 10 minutes.

However, I did spend 1.5 hours in the waiting room!

It also depends on what position your baby is in. Our LO was curled up and not giving us a clear picture of his heart. So ours took maybe 40 minutes total. We also had the first appt of the day so there was not really a wait time.

The tech got most of the pics she needed, but not all of them. We tried changing my position, drinking water, etc. Eventually, the dr came in and did it himself to try to get all the angles he needed. Luckily for us everything was normal so our time spent with the dr was quick. If we had to discuss a potential problem, I'm sure i would've been there much longer.

When I called for the appt they said the minimum is 30 minutes but it can take much longer (think: hours) if the baby isn't positioned correctly.

Thanks for the responses! Thankfully my mom was able to leave work early and meet me at the office. I was expecting a long apt but the pediatric cardiologist did the US himself and it took maybe 10 minutes. I couldn't believe how fast it was! Glad to say everything worked out and he said everything looks great.

I was sent for the test due to having GD for the second time around. Apparently this can sometimes cause cardiac issues in the baby.

We had one cause they suspected a thickened nuchal fold and it took about 20-25 minutes at Madonna perinatal.
