Fever Question - talk me through this

So i'll probably wind up answering my own question but bear with me....DS has a 103 temp. He was really sick last weekend which turned out to be a cold/ear infection. He's been on antibiotics since Tuesday and was responding well and feeling so much better. But today I noticed he was warm all day. I gave him motrin about 2 hours ago and had him fall asleep in my bad. I just transferred him over to his crib and he is sweating!!! I didn't want to take his temp again because that would wake him up. Also, he has been acting normal all day, maybe just a tad more lethargic but nothing too abnormal. So here's the question, the fever probably couldn't be another infection, right? Since he's on the antibiotic still. Should I assume this is something viral now??? Could it be teething maybe? Does that cause fever? I'm just bummed because it seems like he always sick and I can't seem to figure it out. He's only been to daycare 1 day in a week and a half so not too much exposure to germs. Ughh. TIA.

No advice at all - just Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Do you have a video monitor? I would keep an eye on him - and go in there before you go to bed tonight. If he still feels warm to you - then - ugh - I don't know what to do then...do you wake him?? Give him a bottle? Take his temp? I am no help! Sorry!

Maybe some other moms can help! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Fever Question - talk me through this

I have a video monitor AND the angelcare. We're overkill over here. Thing is, and I should have mentioned this, he runs HIGH fevers when he runs a fever. I've seen it go to 105 almost but actually he really was terribly sick that time. I start to think sometimes I have a bad thermometer. He typically doesn't wake up at night to eat but these last few weeks have been a crap shoot with dealing with colds, sickness, etc. But I am constantly checking on him. I'm stumped too --- I appreciate the responseChat Icon

Well...if he is sweating I think that would be a good sign...like fever breaking. I would def give him more motrin when you can or give him some tylenol when you go to bed. Fevers have a way of creeping up on us in the wee hours of the am.
As far as it not being an infection??? sorry no help here just Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

hmm, not sure. The infection he had was one similar to conjunctivitus where his eyes were goopy, a lot of congestion and a double ear infection. Doc specified that it was a specific one that went for ears and eyes. And soon after he started the antibiotic his eyes cleared up. By the next day. And he hasn't had a fever since until today. His ears actually weren't terrible. The doc said that if he was a year older he probably wouldn't even give him anything to treat yet since both ears were only "half-infected". So I don't know. Ughhh, i hate this. I did just go in though and he appears to have cooled down. I have the humidifier going which cools his room down so maybe that's a good thing. And good call about the sweating...that does usually mean that the fever broke. Didn't even think of that. Thanks ladies!!!

I wouldn't wake him-go check before u fgo to sleep and just feel his head-he is good for a good part of the night with motrin.
Call the doctor if it spikes tomorrow.
it can be viral--not teething if its high.
Or..he needs a diff med.

Unfortunately it could be another infection....last week my son had a sinus infection on Tuesday...he was put on Omnicef...by Saturday he was running a fever again. He was getting worse!

We went back to the ped where he now had an ear infection...we had to switch the antibiotics to something stronger. He also received a shot of antibiotics. Good LuckChat Icon

Re: Fever Question - talk me through this

thanks for thinking of us...he slept until 7:15 which is late for him. I checked him a few times overnight and he felt cooler so I was hopeful. But he still was at 102.7 when he woke up and 100.7 after tylenol. Called the ped and they want me to bring him in tomorrow. They suspect that he may have caught a virus on top of this because the antibiotic should have killed anything bacterial.

Aja, he is also on Omnicef right now but she didn't want to change it up until she saw him because she really thinks its viral.

So we wait. Again. Thanks again everyone!!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
