Re: *ANOTHER UPDATE* Advice needed - how can I prepare for when it's time to say goodbye?

I rarely post here but just read your story and am so glad that your cat Clover is feeling better.
As someone who just lost our cat a week and a half ago just enjoy every moment. Our cat got really sick pretty fast, in about 6 weeks. During this time I worked more from home when I could, gave lots of extra pets, made him as comfortable as possible, stayed up late with him many nights when he was doing really bad and just slowed down to really enjoy him. My husband and I discovered nursing skills we never knew we had, giving him medication via a pill gun, giving him shots and feeding him through a feeding tube.
We did everything we could to help him and we miss him very much but we are at peace knowing we did all that we could do.
He followed us around everywhere in the house and was super sweet and loving so I miss him greatly but what I think about is I am so glad I had I had the opportunity to love him. He was my first pet, he was great and he taught me how immensely you can love an animal. Even as much as I miss him now, I still wouldn't have traded any moment of it for anything and focus on the joy he brought us.
This was really touching - thank you for sharing your story

Re: *UPDATE 10/12* Advice needed - how can I prepare for when it's time to say goodbye?
I'm so sorry
I don't think you can ever really prepare. All you can do is say to yourself that you loved her with all your heart for all her time. Whether that time winds up being another hour or another month. You just KNOW in your heart you loved her, you were there for her, you gave her all the care you could. At some point you do have to accept that our beloved family members will die. Take comfort in thinking about how you lived with her, how she was there in your lives, all her personality & antics and cuddling, think about what you had, not what’s gone. Try to focus on the time you had her and smile, not the time you won’t.
I try very hard to think very positive about the happiness I had, because I feel like if I think about the loss it would devastate me too much. I also try to focus on what I still have in my life, the lives that count on me to still love them and not get lost in my grief. I am so sorry that your baby's time with yuo is so limited

Thank you so much, it really helps to hear things like this, especially from someone else who loves cats as much as I do.

I am so sorry, It's so hard. I know when I lost my Tello to cancer when he was 14 it was me who had to make the decision to have him euthanized. I didn't want to, I wanted him to peacefully die in his sleep, but that wasn't the way. Everyone said 'you'll just KNOW when it's time'. You’ll know when he’s suffering and you’re only keeping him alive for you.
He had gotten to that point where he wasn't really eating. I tried everything, baby food, A/D, steak, chicken, pudding, tuna, ice cream, anything. I knew it was coming time. We were sitting together outside on the deck (He was an inside cat, but he just always stayed with me wherever I was, so he would come outside with me to sit). Anyway, he was outside with me and he looked at me and I just KNEW. It was time to let him go. When I got him to the vet he suddenly had this burst of normalcy. He was acting totally normal and not lethargic and I started to second guess myself but I went through with it.
A few days later I was looking at pictures of him. I had taken a picture the day before I had taken him to be euthanized and OMG, it broke my heart how bad he had looked. I didn’t see it when he was with me, but looking at it after I realized I had made the right decision. Sometimes I still look at that picture when I miss him to remember that as much as I miss him, he was so sick and I did the right thing for him.

thanks for sharing this made me sad BUT also made me feel better at the same time!! as in, I'll know when it's time and there is hope that I will know it's the right decision. I'm afraid of always second-guessing.

Thanks again everyone. We just got back from the vet. It's time. We are taking her back tomorrow to say goodbye. Today is DD's first birthday party, and then tonight we will spend some time with Clover and have lots of extra petting.

Re: *FINAL UPDATE 10/14* We said goodbye.
I'm so sorry for your loss
Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge...
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food and water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing: they miss someone very special to them; who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. The bright eyes are intent; the eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to break away from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. YOU have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
THEN YOU CROSS RAINBOW BRIDGE TOGETHER...

*FINAL UPDATE 10/14* We said goodbye.
I'm so sorry for your loss. Losing an animal is extremely difficult. I was a mess when I had to put my 15yr old dog to sleep because his heart just gave out. Try and remember you gave 18yrs of love and happiness.

Re: *FINAL UPDATE 10/14* We said goodbye.
I gasped out loud when I read your title update. I am so so sorry. I know how you feel, I truly do. You are an awesome mom to your cat and your child. Never forget that. You can look back with no regrets and that is a wonderful thing. I am so sorry for your loss of your beloved cat. It's too bad that every single cat and animal doesn't have an owner like you, who cherished them until the end.
Your kitty is out of pain now but surely had an awesome life of being loved until the end.
