Find a home you love but a little leary of one of the neighboring homes....

So we've been house hunting for almost a year now Chat Icon we recently found one that we both really like, it meets so many of our wants... The thing is the neighbor right next door doesn't seem to upkeep their home, half the house is missing shingles, the yard is full of junk etc. would this steer you away from purchasing the neighboring home? I'm nervous because my parents recently had people move in next door and they are a bunch of slobs, my dad hates it so I'm wondering if we would be putting ourself in a similar situation or if we should just put in a tall fence and call it a day! WWYD?

I Stayed away from a house that had a neighbor like that and clearly so did everyone else cause the house sat. You can only put a fence so high by code and you still have to see the mess even with a fence.

You can't always control your neighbors cause new ones move in all the time but I wouldn't pick a house with already bad neighbors.

Unfortunately this would absolutely steer me away because you are stuck with this neighbor! I would also worry about junk/trash in the yard attracting creatures which could then come to your yard. No thanks!

We came across something similar when we were hunting. The LIF girls told me to talk to the neighbors and find out what the story was. Maybe it's something you can live with?

Steer clear. We bought our house ignoring the neighbor issue, and it's the one thing I hate and can't change about the house.

Would make me rule the house out. Maybe that wouldn't bother some but it would drive me crazy and there is nothing you can do about it unfortunately.

I feel your pain. We looked for an insanely long time. Apparently I am very picky and particular Chat Icon

That would be a major deal breaker for me. It would drive me nuts to look out my window or pull into my driveway and see the house next door all disheveled. It would also make me wonder about creatures coming into my yard etc. I couldn't do it.

Love my neighbor but they do no keep up with their home. They lawn is all weeds and they never mow. Their vinyl siding is on the side of the home is so dirty. I don't plan on selling anytime soon so I'm not too worried but it does drive me nuts. If you can deal with the sight of the home and you aren't looking to sell right away maybe you can look past it. If it would really bother you or you worry about your resale than look else where.

For me it wouldn't be a deal breaker. That home may be your forever home but you never know how long the neighbor will live there. You can buy a house with awesome neighbors and 6 months later a new neighbor that is a slob may move in. Unfortunately you can't control those things. So if I loved the home yes I would likely buy it

I agree.

I feel like we are "that neighbor" at the moment.

We are in the midst of reno-ing our whole house so it looks like shite from the outside.

DH is doing all the work himself and we've had some monkey wrenches thrown into the process so it is taking a long time.

I'm hoping we can have new siding and windows installed by the end of the summer at this point.

I've also seen that while it may take awhile, houses renovated or new houses go up where a crappy house sat for awhile.

Depends. If the house looks abandoned then absolutely not. It we are talking some junk in the yard and grass that is cut every 4 weeks then maybe. If the owner is older I would be more inclined to buy and help mow their lawn but if they are younger that would be a red flag to me.

if the rest of the area is nice and kept up can you get some information about the house from neighbors? Perhaps the owner is ill or elderly, maybe even going into forclosure.

Re: Find a home you love but a little leary of one of the neighboring homes....

We saw the people outside when we viewed the home we are interested in, they aren't an elderly couple. I'd say 40's-50's. I'm not sure it's a case of them just renovating either. There's an open house today so I'm going to look more closely when I go there. The rest of the homes are nice it's just the one neighbor. Hey maybe it will help us negotiate a better price! Probably not but hey I'll use anything to get a better price! ??

This. And if it's that bad an eyesore, I'd be worried about the value/resale of your home if for whatever unforeseen reason you had to sell again in a few years.

I would keep looking. A yard filled with junk is a red flag to me. You don't know what type of animals a junk filled yard harbors and you definitely don't want any unwanted critters hanging around your house.
