Finished basement advice- tips?

We're going to finish our basement starting in the spring and i was just curious... for those that have done it... is there anything you'd change? do differently?

We're probably doing tile down there so if it does flood at all, we don't have to rip up the whole floor.

Hoping to make a playroom, closets and i'd really love another bedroom/bath down there too. But not sure if there will be enough room with all the poles, tanks and so forth. Basement is 1200sq ft i believe.

Definitely put a bathroom if you can. I wish we had one in ours. And more storage space!

Re: Finished basement advice- tips?

If u can swing a bathroom it's awesome! We got a full bath down in ours. We did half laminate floor (boys cars and ride on toys roll grreat on it. We did the other half carpet by our tv area bc the kids lay on the floor. Are u in area that floods a lot? If not I'd do half and half

I love our basement it is the best area in our house and we are alway in it.

We also did a kitchen cabinet area with a sink. Great for having parties down there

IMO a bathroom is a must, even if it is just a half bath.
A mini-fridge :)

If you have a laundry room down there, try to get a slop sink too. I wish I had one.

And now that we are down there a lot, I kind of wish we put an egress window down there in case of an emergency.

Another vote for a half bath!
Our basement is a play room and I wish I had gone with a berber carpet instead of a plushy one. Two years old and it looks so beat up already :(

We finished 3/4 of the basement - left a storage room that is full. Def. wish we had a bath down there.

If you have the money, I'd switch over to a tank-less water heater. My friend has one and they save SO much space.

It's exactly what it sounds like. It's a water heater that hooks up to the wall and kind of looks like a cable box/wireless route (maybe slightly bigger).

I have no idea how much it is. It's def not cheap but I've read that in the log run it could end up saving you money.

If you use light colors in the basement, it will really make the space feel airy and larger. White perimeter cabinets with a light blue or light green rug looks awesome...and even add a small section of open bookshelves for interest. This can add a lot of extra storage. Wood Mode even makes a great cabinet that pulls out to a table if you need an area for crafts on demand. If your budget allows dig out the window well and add a larger window to let extra light in.

Good luck! Doing this right with a good design can add a house to your house...
