Re: Fire Island for the family?
the whole island seems a bit pricey.... I don't want to stay a whole week, just a few nights

I'm going to guess that any house rentals during the summer will have a week long minimum.

Re: Fire Island for the family?
I really like every area on Fire Island but we've been renting in Ocean Beach since 1997. We moved from the singles scene right into the family scene in OB. You can get a 7 day rental, a mid week Monday-Friday rental or a weekend (or longer terms). For a weekend, expect to pay more than you would pay for a 5 day mid-week. We lucked out with a place that does Sunday-Friday but that is not very common. In Ocean Beach, life with kids revolves around the playground, which is big and has a beautiful view. People visit from the other towns for the playground. I have friends who have rented in Davis Park for the past 2 summers but I have not been there in years. We want to visit each other out there this summer. By reputation, Davis Park is just as family friendly as Ocean Beach. We stick with Ocean Beach because we know people there & it's like home for us.

Re: Fire Island for the family?
We've stayed a few times in Fair Harbor when the DC were smaller. We liked it because they had a bay beach and a nice area for them to play. There was also a little ice cream shop to walk to after dinner. And it's also close to Kismet if you wanted a little more adult action at night.
When they were older we stayed at Ocean Bay Park. They're teenagers so they would walk over to Ocean Beach and hang out both during the day and night. We also spent a day at the Sunken Forest which was nice.

Re: Fire Island for the family?
I feel like Fair Harbor, Saltaire and Davis Park are the most family friendly.

Re: Fire Island for the family?
I stayed in Fair Harbor last summer--4 couples, 2 had children. Every morning the kids and parents went to the park with swings, slides, etc. Very neighborhoody and safe. I'd recommend it!
