Fireplace - smoke smell in house?
My DH decided to start up the fireplace yesterday in our new house for the first time. We were supposed to wait until we got it cleaned since we have no idea when it was used last. I don't know what happened but when I got home everything smelled like smoke. Is there any way to get rid of the smell?

Did you have it cleaned? Checked that the flue is ok?
Be careful, you can get carbon dioxide in your home if it's not venting properly.
How to get the smoke smell out, I have no idea. Just have to air it out alot...how bad is it?

The flue is new and when we had our inspection everything was fine with it but I told him not to do anything until we had the chimney cleaned and everything like that. I'm really mad about this. I am just going to have to have all the windows open all day and the fan going I guess...

Was the flue opened? Also, I have noticed on really windy nights that we get the same thing. So we don't put the fire on

Re: Fireplace - smoke smell in house?
did you notice smoke going in the house. I have no doors on our fireplace its open but once we have a fire going it goes straight up you can see the smoke go right up.
if its going into your house it could be the following: using soft woods (like pine/maple which you shouldn't burn), flue it might be stuck and you need to call up the person who installed it or it was windy and the wind was pushing the smoke back into the house (only happened once during the storm that gave us a black out) or the other thing is you have too much creosote build up and a chimney sweep should take care.
If your house smells of smoke it will go away open the windows a bit and vent it out and clean out the fireplace of any ash.

Re: Fireplace - smoke smell in house?
Thanks. I finally just got the real story he was "messing around" with the vents and closed it while the fireplace was on and smoke came inside
