First Dr's Appointment

Hi Ladies,

I recently found out I am pregnant and I have my first dr's appointment on the 26th.

Did or will your husband come with you to your first appointment?

Thanks!

We scheduled any ultrasound appointments around my husband's schedule. For me, the first appt was around 8-10 weeks and it had an internal sonogram, so I'm glad he came to that. We will be doing the same for this first appointment too.

First Dr's Appointment

Personally, I wanted my DH or my mother to come with me to all visits in the beginning, and I wish I had had someone with me at all visits. I had had 2 very early losses already and didn't want to get bad news alone. And later on, when I went for my 35 week visit, and ended up being sent to L&D and subsequently induced, I wish I had someone with me at the office. Do I think he missed anything? Yes, at some visits, but no at others. I think it's a good idea to follow the general rule that any visit they are checking the baby's HR or sonogram to bring someone (not necessarily DH) with you.

First Dr's Appointment

DH came to my first appointment - it was the first time we got to see the baby on ultrasound and hear/see the heartbeat. He hasn't come to any routine visits since though. Except the 12 week NT scan and he will be coming to the 20 week anatomy.

DH has been traveling for work, so could not come with me to the 8 week or 10 week appointments (I had ultrasounds down both times) but since I too, like another poster, had had a previous loss, I did not want to go alone and took my mother (she got a big kick out of it too since they didn't have the same technology when she was pregnant with my sister and me so it was really neat for her to see!). I facetimed with DH though during the first sono too (the tech didn't mind) so he could see it while it was being done nonetheless) and then we took video during the 2nd and he watched. The NT scan is this Thursday and DH will be coming to this one (I told him I wanted him there and that it would be good for him to be there in person). I think my dr does sono's at each appointment so we'll see what happens going forward, but I was a nervous wreck at each one (due to the prior loss and not many symptoms this go-round either) and it was nice to have the support just in case.

Re: First Dr's Appointment

Thanks everyone! My husband wants to come to the first appointment and I want him there too. I asked the receptionist at the Dr's office if husbands usually come and she rolled her eyes and said "he caaaan". So I wasn't sure if it was uncommon.

How did you guys deal with waiting for your first appointment? It feel like its forever away. I am so concerned about how my pregnancy is progressing because I have really no symptoms. ( I believe I am only 5 weeks/ 2 days). The suspense is killing me!

I usually see a few partners in the waiting room at my OBGYN, but my DH only came to the sono appts b/c we both work in the city and logistically it's not that easy.

If it's easy for him to go I would say why not.

To pass the time I would focus on eating healthy while you feel good. Congrats!!!

I just waited anxiously lol. I got s BFP early on so I had to wait awhile. My husband didn't come to the first visit. It would have been hard for him to come from the city. He did come for the big sonograms. Most of the visits were quick so it was easier for me just to go myself.

Re: First Dr's Appointment

With #1 he did come with me, but that was only because it was easy for him. He worked close to home and was able to take time off easily (extended lunch breaks, coming in later or leaving early, etc). This time around, it wasn't that easy. He works an hour from home so in order for him to come he'd have to take the entire day off and was out of sick days. I just didn't see it as a necessity.

First Dr's Appointment

DH came to all early appointments with sonograms (we had a bunch in the first trimester) Now he will only come for the 20 week scan and probably at the very end. I work for an ob/gyn and from what I see, it seems like during the day all the women come alone, and at night all the husbands show up lol

Re: First Dr's Appointment

Don't let anyone in the office make you feel weird about bringing him if you want him there! I had a stillbirth and a miscarriage and it will be a cold day in HELLLLLLLL when I don't bring my husband to my appointments. If he wants to be there, bring him! I find that my situation is a little different, but even if I had a perfect history, I would still want my husband there for the 1st appointment.

DH came with me to my first appt - it's the first time you get to see your LO's heartbeat - it's exciting and special and he was definitely happy to witness that. He came to all of my sono's. I went alone to my regular check ups unless it was a late night appt where he decided to tag along.

Mine comes to almost every appointment. He likes hearing the heartbeat. I never get the impression that the office staff thinks its strange, and if they do I don't really care.

My DH also comes to almost every appt. He did with DD and now he tries with this baby too. It is just as much his experience as it yours! I would have asked the woman at the desk if she had something in her eye and if thats why she rolled them at you. You are going to be seeing ALOT of these people so if the staff rubs you the wrong way at all in the beginning voice it to the doctor or call them out on it. My last OB had a nurse in the office I couldn't stand and by the time I was ready to have DD I dreaded going there because of her. I never understood why doctors allow poeple like that to run their front desks..Ick!

First Dr's Appointment

My husband came to both of the 1st appointments because I was also having a sono. He only comes to the appointments when I am having a sono. At the other appointments the only thing that really happens is taking your blood pressure, weight and listening to the heart beat. We did not think that it was necessary for him to be there for that!

Re: First Dr's Appointment

I don't really see the point of DH coming to any appointments that don't include a sono. I would have LOVED my husband to see the baby, especially the anatomy scan. He did try to get off work for that one, but was denied it. That kinda sucked. He only got to come to one with me so far and the only reason I encouraged it was because I wanted him to meet my OB before we're all in the delivery room together. lol. But other than meeting, it was unnecessary since all we did was talk (nothing that included him, just my concerns, etc) and then listen to heart beat with doppler. I mean, it was cool for him to hear that, but not worth taking time off work. Even with my first pregnancy when it was simple for him to get out of work, we still only planned it for sonograms (I believe it was just the 8wk and the anatomy scan). So that would be my advise. If he can't come to any - no big deal. Show him the pics when you get home. But if he CAN get off work easily, then just try to plan them for the sono visits.
