Re: First ivf, what day to transfer 3 or 5
i would think this would be your doctors decision more than yours. we did a five day so we could pick the best blasts. we were also dealing with PCOS and no egg quality, quantity, or significant sperm issues, so it made sense to wait and see how many we would end up with. out of 18 eggs, all were mature, all fertilized, and we ended up putting 2 grade A blasts back on day 5, and have 8 frosties. if your issue is egg quality or significant male factor, or you are at risk to not have a large quantity to choose from, you may want to do a 3dt and not wait to see what happens with them.

Re: First ivf, what day to transfer 3 or 5
Its up to the doctors ultimately....There are factors involved depending on how many embryos they have to work with and the quality of the embryos that they have
ETA- My 1st fresh transfer, my retrieval went great, but many of teh embryos arrested and the 2 that were left were poor quality so we did a day 3 transfer ( chemical pg)
My 2nd transfer, had great retrieval, great fertilization and on day 3 many were still growing nicely so they pushed me to a day 5 (this was decided the morning of day 3)...Had my DD and ultimately used one of the frozen embies from that cycle to conceive with my current

Re: First ivf, what day to transfer 3 or 5
Both of my fresh cycles went on Day 5, but they did schedule me for day 3 and then canceled that morning. At both my ER's they told me it would most likely be a 5 day based on the # of eggs they got 22 round 1 and 15 round 2.
My Dr.'s schedule everyone for day 3 and then based on embryo development change it to 5.
Good Luck !!!

Re: First ivf, what day to transfer 3 or 5
Thanks! I am 32 and lost a tube due to endo so I am working with one side. I have pcos based on lh to fsh ratio. I hope my egg quality is ok?! I had dd after lap surgery with cLomid iui. My second pregnancy I got pregnant the first time I tried! Rather cruel bc I then lost it end of first tri and now I just can't get preggo. Been over a year of trying with help. Last I got checked my fsh was 4 ,seems to vary slightly but never higher than 6 so I hope that means my eggs are ok! You never know though. My dh has good sperm count but had a slight issue with motility? Never had this issue before so doc wants to do half ICsi and half without. Nervous about twins! I had a really difficult first pregnancy. I had that 2 percent awful morning sickness and lived in the ER.

This is my first IVF cycle so I haven't gotten to ET yet, but this is what I was told also. I think the goal is to try to get them to day 5 if they think they can make it. But there's no real way to tell until day 3. GL!!!!!

Re: First ivf, what day to transfer 3 or 5
My RE made the decision - we had no input what-so-ever. I believe that 5 day transfers have a higher success rate, but only because they "know" more about the embryo. At 5 days it's easier to tell which made it to blast and those are more likely to survive.
There are so many different schools of thought on the subject though. Some feel that the embies do better in the womb so you should transfer on day 3, others feel they do better in the petri dish so you should wait until day 5. You really just have to trust your RE if you ask me!

Re: First ivf, what day to transfer 3 or 5
Our RE made the decision. We tranferred two 5 day blasts and had DD.
He did explain that really 3 or 5 days it doesn't matter...some embryos grow better inside the womb then outside..so don't be discouraged if you do a 3DT as oppose to 5DT.

Re: First ivf, what day to transfer 3 or 5
I made the decision with my Dr. I think that it is up to them to advise you, but if you feel strongly one way or the other...they should be open to listening to that. There are of course some clinics that only do 3 or 5 day transfers and there is not much that you can do. My first IVF, I did a 3-day transfer although it was not my Dr.'s preference...mostly because I was afraid that because of my age, my embies would not survive to day 5. For my last IVF, I did a day 5 transfer which was my Dr.'s preference..and the IVF that worked..although I do not think the day of transfer was the reason.
I think the bottom line when it comes to whether or not to go to 3 days or not is how many embies you have on day 3 and how good they look. If you have a lot of embies on day 3 that look good, your Dr. and you may want to go to Day 5 and weed out the lesser embies. What looks good on Day 3 may not look good on Day 5 at all. You may choose to go to Day 3 if you have a lesser number of embies or there is a fear that yoru embies will not make it to day 5. In that case..your Dr. may feel that your embies are better back inside of you.
Good luck!!

With your history I would say they wil probably do a 5 day..low fsh, previous pregnancy etc.
I did 3 day because my embies were ready at that point, I did not have many and I paid out of pocket. I have healthy twin boys
