First LIPA/KEYSPAN BILLS
UGH.. We are not living in the house right now while doing renovations. Most of the electricity was shut off in the house... LIPA has us on balanced biling, which I do not recall asking for.. so our usage was $8.00. But with balanced billing it was $97.00!!! I know we will get it back but I don't feel like paying $89 more than I have to right now, I wasn't planning on going on balanced billing until we had been living in the house a few months.
And KEYSPAN?? The gas has been SHUT OFF FROM THE MAIN from pretty much the day we closed, yet they "estimated" our usage at 47 therms... and our bill is $87!!! We haven't used any gas AT ALL!!!
Do I have any recourse with these bills, or am I stuck paying them this month?
You can request to read your own meter for keyspan, right? I am so pizzed about this.

Re: First LIPA/KEYSPAN BILLS
We had the same problem (like you we've been doing renovations and don't live there). LIPA wasn't so bad...only like $33 but Keyspan was $100 and like you we have the line turned OFF! I told DH to take one of the cards, get the actual usage and mail it in. I paid the bill but am looking for at least a partial refund!

Re: First LIPA/KEYSPAN BILLS
Yes, Keyspand and Lipa you can enter your own meter readings.
What happened to us, we wre also working on our house, NOT on balanced billing - so they would estimate our usage (not even come to read the meter) - our first Keyspand bill was $380!!!!
I called them and told them what the meter said, and they adjusted our bill and sent a new one - so you dont have to pay it. But if you do, you'll get it back eventually.

Re: First LIPA/KEYSPAN BILLS
How do you read the gas meter? Can anyone explain it to me? Maybe I will do that and then call them.

Re: First LIPA/KEYSPAN BILLS
Haha, thanks ladies! I just called them both and LIPA is going to sent a new bill for just the $8.47. Keyspan we'll call in the new reading when we figure out how to do it - I directed DH to instructions on the website

Re: First LIPA/KEYSPAN BILLS
That's what I'm dreading as well. We've been doing strictly renovations in the house and not living there yet..........but can't wait to see the bills we get. We dont have gas........but I'm curious what the electric bill will be.
I'll be ready to call and argue if its an outrageous one.

Re: First LIPA/KEYSPAN BILLS
they are pretty good about changing it. I swear the people who lived tehre before us would keep all the lights on, crank up the heat, and open all the windows.
they eventually will do their own meter reading - one month I didnt have to pay LIPA (before balanced billing) because i paid too much the month before.

Re: First LIPA/KEYSPAN BILLS
I hate hate Keyspan. You can use hardley anything and still have a high bill because of the all the surcharges.
This past winter since it was warmer than last year apparently they added some charge that $12 because we didn't use enough gas and when I called they told me that they can't credit us.

Re: First LIPA/KEYSPAN BILLS
Our first bill was so much ....and then we didn't have a bill for about 4 months. (We didn't live in our home during renovations either).
Good Luck.
