First prenatal visit not until 9 wks??

The day after I got my BFP I called my OB-GYN and was told they don't schedule the first visit until you are 9 weeks.... is this weird???

I mean I know how to take care of myself until then and not sure what I'm expecting them to do but I feel like it's odd considering the first months are the most crucial and you'd be surprised how many people don't know they're supposed to take prenatal vitamins.

That seems pretty standard for most OB offices. If you are perfectly healthy and do not have any issues in your history, I know many offices don't like to see patients until 9-10 wks.

My doctor won't see me until 8.5 weeks. I am so anxious. I didn't know I was supposed to take prenatals before trying to conceive, so I only started taking them when I got my BFP which wasn't until 5.5 weeks... That's 5.5 whole weeks I was not taking care of myself. I also was eating deli meats and blue cheese and all sorts of bad things. I also feel like they should see you right away at least to give you information and confirm the pregnancy via blood or urine or whatever and THEN schedule the next one between 8-10 to do everything else they normally do on the first visit.

Mine didn't want to schedule the first appointment til 8 weeks. That is usually the norm!

You can buy OTC prenatals..It's really all the same. Make sure you buy one with DHA.

This is common practice.

Drs usually only see you earlier if you had miscarriages or problems in the past.

It is pretty standard, but they usually schedule a confirmation appt before that. the confirmation appt is usually by your gyn and they draw your blood to confirm your pregnsnt. Then you can schedule your ob visit (if its 2 different drs). The gyn can answer your basic questions and make recommendations on vitamins. Thats how my practice works.

9 weeks is standard but if you want to see your ob before that then ask. See if they will see you about 7-9 weeks. This is when they can see a heartbeat and consider a pregnancy viable.

You are actually supposed to be taking prenatal vitamins before you get pregnant... and OTC is just fine.

But yes: the 8 weeks is standard (unfortunately, the rate of "chemical" pregnancy and early miscarriage is high).

yeah, at my office they'll see u at 8 weeks, but not earlier..it does stink.

I think that is pretty standard. The only reason I have been having sonos early is because I've been seeing a RE, but I will finally be seeing a OB GYN when I am 8.5 weeks.

I'm glad to see it's common. My SILs and MIL and mom were all very surprised but I guess that's becoming the norm...

I have been taking prenatals for 3 months before I got pregnant. I'm also a student nurse so I'm pretty knowledgable so I'm not so worried about myself- I was thinking more that it was odd that they don't want to get early education in with people who might not know these things.

My first appt was at 10 weeks the first time. This time they saw me at 8 weeks because I had a miscarriage. The nurse answered any questions I had over the phone. She actually had my swing by the office for samples of prenatal vitamins. You should ask for samples so you can see which brands you like.
