First veggie/fruit

Can everyone share what vegetable and fruit they started with? Is it okay to give a fruit and a veggie in the same day or should I just start with one at a time? DD is just having cereal twice a day as of now. Thanks!

Re: First veggie/fruit

I started with applesauce.
Then pears, bannanas, and then peaches.

I wouldn't start two things at the same time since if your DC has a reaction you won't know which food item it would be

Re: First veggie/fruit

I started fruits, then yellow veggies, then green. Always 1 "new" food at a time for 3-4 days in a row before trying something else

We did: pears, applesauce, peaches, etc.

I was actually told to start with the sweet potato an carrots since that is the most favored veggies?

And a friend said NO Squash, that all kids hate it

Re: First veggie/fruit

DS loooooves squash.

As for Carrots & sweet potatoes, I held off as long as I could. The whole nitrate issue. I do give him them but very spread out.

Root Veggies (potatoes, carrots, turnips, pasnips, beets) and Leafy Greens (spinach, kale, etc...) have high levels of nitrates. Some argue you should not feed baby these foods until 8 months + because nitrates can cause 'blue baby syndrome' (oxygen does not flow in their body) ... it's not common, but the nitrates have been linked to it. So I feed DS this food but not every day ... I spread it out to 1-2 times per week. And you should never home make these foods until 8months + ... or at minimum never use the water in which it was cooked to puree them. Drain, rinse and use fresh water if you are going to make it. Organic doesn;t make any difference in nitrate content. Baby food companies are not required to regulate it, but they self regulate to not increase the nitrates in their packages supposedly.

Re: First veggie/fruit

The nitrate issue is a personal one. I feed Organic and make my own food and I have no fear of nitrates. I researched it a LOT. And I started with wholesomebabyfood.com as a starting point.

The incidence of the blue baby snydrome is actually less then 0 % in the US. ....

I dont use the water when cooking those veggies though, why chance it.

But you have to do research and take your own stance on it.

My son LOVES and always loved
Squash, carrots and sweet potatoes.

he hates greens.

HE loves all fruit.

I started with veggies ....and carrots, and sweet potatoes first.

I tried Peas but he really doesnt like them.

For fruits I started with apples and pears and bananas.

Re: First veggie/fruit

More nitrate info.

Shows how oragnic foods dont use nitrate fertilizers and have a smaller amount of them.

For veggies we started with the sweet potatoes, and for fruits we started with pears.

My DD has always loves squash. Even now at 17 months, her favorite veggies are yellow squash or zucchini.

I did fruits first BTW. Apples, pears, prunes (she loved and still loves them), peaches, banana.
Then veggies sweet potato, carrot, peas, squash, green beans, mixed veggies. She loved both fruits and veggies equally.
