Follies & Eggs- dumb question
Now I very well could google this and get confused again but maybe you could explain it to me like I'm 12. Just because you make follicles, does it mean you're making eggs? Does the size of the follies signify the eggs are there? Could they be filled with something else instead? Sorry for the dumb question!

There is a debate with doctors about "empty follies". From all I have been able to gather, most doctors agree that follie = egg; however, egg may not be mature, may not be of good quality, may not be ovulated. Even during IVF ER, some follies are called "empty" but in most likelihood, the egg couldn't be retrieved b/c it adhered to the follie wall due to being over mature, immature or just bad.
On the other hand, you can develop cysts that are just pockets of fluid.
HTH.

That was very informative, thank you!

Re: Follies & Eggs- dumb question
It is my understanding that you never know if a Follie has an egg in it unless you do IVF.
Chances are most do, but in a normal healthy person from time to time a Follie could be empty.

Re: Follies & Eggs- dumb question
the follicles developing are filled with fluid. i guess once the follicle has swelled to a certain size, the assumption is that the egg inside is mature. i think most follicles do have eggs. but i remember when i went for my ET that they counted and measured the follicles the day before and i actually wound up with more eggs. i guess it could be that some were not as visible on the sono or maybe more were mature than what they had expected.

Re: Follies & Eggs- dumb question
i had around 25-30 follies prior to my ER also, and 18 eggs were retrieved which were all mature. i think once eggs are recruited by the ovaries to mature, some of the smaller follies do not continue to develop and produce or ovulate an egg.
take a look at PennyCat though - she had like 30+ follies prior to ER but they ended up retrieving 9 eggs. there are a bunch of reasons why this could have happened but she also did several IUIs with 4 or more follies that ended up being BFN so there is a chance that she had chronically empty follicles.
i'll let PennyCat elaborate if she wants to but in the end there is definitely no guarantee that a follicle contains any egg.

Actually it was a statement PennyCat made a while back about possibly having empty follies that made me wonder about it...

Yup, I woke up from the retrieval and I was shocked because I knew we had 35 follies!!

Re: Follies & Eggs- dumb question
I thought that they could tell that there are eggs in there by estrogen levels at monitoring.
I know this is how they tell at CD3 if the leftover follies/cysts are filled with fluid or are leftover follies that didn't rupture.

I think the estrogen levels are indicative of the amount of mature eggs - but it won't really tell you how many you have.
To OP -When I went through IVF, I had 8 (of what they thought) were mature follcles. We retrieved 6 eggs, 5 of which were mature.
