I am sad she was fired. I always enjoyed her shows. I don't think she is a nasty person. Maybe a little ignorant. She is southern bred and it's a different ballgame down South. I spend a lot of time in S. Carolina as DH Parents have a home there. One time DH and I were on a pier and we asked this black man how many fish he caught and he was very meek and afraid to speak to us. It's seriously sad. But anyways, the point is she made jokes. In poor taste. But how many comedians make racist jokes and they get away with it? I don't think she is a hateful person. She has had black people on her show before that are her good friends. One of my good friends who is black posted this on his Facebook which ultimately shocked me coming from him but he does kind of have a point!

I'm a little confused about the whole Paula Deen situation. I know we are supposedly in a post segregation era and racial supposedly racist free society according to the powers that be. I have no idea why this day in age they persecute people for using the "N" word I don't want to be the bearer of bad news but the word is as American as apple pie and its not going anywhere. Also this is the same word that has afforded all these hip-hop moguls and rappers to afford the luxurious life they live. The Hip-Hop industry is a multi-billion dollar industry built off that that word so you tell me who's hypocrite and we all know who controls the industry........

She wouldn't let her black employees at a restaurant use the same restroom as the customers, but it was okay for the white employees to do so.

So, its not persecution for using that word.

Its persecution for not giving equal rights to all employees and for doing nothing while an employee was verbally and physically assaulted on premesis.
That IS being a nasty person. That is NOT "a little ignorant", that is a mothereffing BOATLOAD of ignorance.

It has nothing to do with comedians or artists.

ETA:
Signed,
Someone who has spent a lot of time in the South.

I get what the posted was saying, from the article it seemed that she may have thrown the N word around. Which nowadays people have very different opinions about.

Now that you add those details it changes it completely but none of what you wrote was posted in that link.

ETA: Just to clarify, when I read article in the original link - I didn't see her as a down right racist. However, adding the facts above makes her seem like a horrible person and racist.

Yes, that link was from the breaking news yesterday afternoon. I would edit the post to add the links to the deposition (may be links within the article in my OP, not sure) but I'm on my phone and have trouble at times posting links. I recommend that people google for the deposition, it really is quite a read!

I am, so crazy. I had no idea about all this controversy around her and I loved her shows and food. Funny how TV can make you seem warm and loving.

We had this discussion at work yesterday. Bottom line, food network does not want to associate itself with her. She's an azz. I don't care if you grew up in the deep, south, it's 2013 and your a "celebrity". Act better. And that "apology" was lame with a capital lame. She's a joke.

I do feel it shows what kind of person she is- to make people use separate washrooms, to want black waiters and waitresses dress like slaves- totally ignorant and clearly not giving a shit.

To be honest I lost a lot of respect for her last year after the diabetes drug endorsement.

Of course you guys are going to take what I said out of context and jump down my throat for being a republican. I did not throw politics in this at all! For the record to those that called me racist. And that second paragraph was posted was written by my friend who is indeed black. So to those that have called me a racist go to hell and shame on you. You're disgusting.

And furthermore I did not know all the details. I did not know that she had different bathrooms for her servers and whatnot. That's wrong. It goes beyond her using that word.

But thanks for attacking me and calling me racist. Some of you women really ought to think before jumping down someones throat. Especially if you don't know me. Chat Icon

MrsMick, your response is so ignorant and has underlying racist tones..,,"racist free society, according to the powers that be!?!?!?!!" And "the "N" word is as American as Apple Pie...I am seriously shocked and somewhat afraid that is 2013 someone would say or think that! No wonder you thought that black man on the pier was afraid and meek...maybe he just did not want to talk to YOU!!!

Um take a moment and read what I wrote very slowly. That final paragraph was written by my friend who is black! So start reading it again slowly from start to finish and hopefully you can decipher what I said and what Mark said.

Maybe you need to take a moment to learn how to quote somebody properly because nowhere in your post did you say "and now this section is copied from my friend's FB"...you simply added it to the end of your statement, which most people would assume are still your words since you did not attribute them to another person.

Re: Food Network to drop Paula Deen

Wow, I had no idea about all the other stuff. I didn't read or watch much...all i saw was one article with the video of her apology. It said she used the N word.

I don't know if what I'm about to say will be understood or if it will be considered offensive...but I didn't grow up on long island. I was born in harlem then moved to queens...then long island when i was a teen...so things that were normal for me growing up are not the norms on LI.

(the following is mainly in response to what mrsmick's friend said about the N word)
Nigga and N*gger are two VERY different things in my opinion. Maybe it's bc I grew up hearing "nigga" tossed around line any other word. I'm not sure how I feel about the former...in one way i feel that it's not good bc that word was derived from a word used for oppression. But I've heard others say that they feel that by using "nigga" in a different context they have taken the negative power away from the word and I guess I kind of see that side of it too. (if you're a fan of the old tv show "the jeffersons"...you know just how funny a "nigga please!" can be when used in the proper context)

but when you walk around calling people N*ggers...or treating them like lesser beings and the other stuff that pearljamchick said she did...that is a whole nother ball game.

I don't walk around using either word really...but on occasion I have said "nigga please" to my husband...but that's a tv reference for us. If someone else heard it and wasn't familiar with the jeffersons they might be horrified.

Anyway...what she did / said was wrong. It wasn't pop culture or anything along those lines in the way she used it...it was just straight up hateful. She absolutely should be canned for it. I know if I owned FN I wouldn't want her representing my brand with comments like that.

I'm so surprised to hear the detail on the things she said. That's horrible.

This is all very surprising to me. Honestly asking-is there proof or is it truly known about the bathroom thing or is it he said/she said?

From what I've read it just seems that this person who is suing them is saying this, but there has not been confirmation?

I'd hate for her to be condemned before it's known for sure that these things happened. If they did, obviously it is disgusting and unacceptable! But if it didn't, it would be sad for her career to end this way because of lies.

I understood what MrsMick wrote. I clearly took it that the second paragraph was a quote from her friend. Just saying.

You think that by saying you are Cuban or that you have black friends that automatically means you can't be a racist? Chat Icon Please. Plenty of minorities are racists. Your statements were stupid I won't say you are a racist bc I don't know you but your statements were offensive, period.

What does being a Republican have to do with it? posters didn't like what you said, they thought it was wrong so go and assign it to the fact that it is bc you are Republican? how about taking ownership for that fact that you offended people, it is your right to say what you want but I hate when people say conterversial shit and then act all surprised when people get offended.

First off, you are right- some minorities are racist. BUT, if I have a whole bunch of friends that are of different backgrounds and have people of different races in my family and accepted them, it would clearly mean I am not racist as I choose to hang out with them. Why would I hang out with them if I didn't like them based on the color of their skin? So for that, you guys are wrong to state that I am racist.

If you scroll up to previous posts, someone did mention "Oh well she's Republican....." And that's where I defended myself in that aspect. I never once mentioned anything politically in this thread. That person was ignorant for posting that.

And, the first paragraph was written by me. I didn't say anything offensive AT ALL. The second was written by my friend Mark who made that as his status.
Yes, I can see what he said was offensive. But I didn't say those words. He did.

And furthermore, yes I have posted crazy controversial shit in the past and I stand behind what I say. This, however people misunderstood.

It's more than that she used that disgusting word (which, IMO, NO ONE should use that word whether it ends in -a or -er. It's DISGUSTING) but it's also her racist actions. Good for Food Network and good for Smithfield Foods for dropping her.

I understood what she meant too (about which part her friend posted) but seriously my uncle is black there is no way he would say the n word is as american as apple pie. His roots trace back to slaves in the south. It amazes me that even today people (no matter what their race is) think like this. It is not okay to say that to someone no matter what the context and for black people to say it to one another is terrible to IMO, it isn't a friendly term in any context to me.

He said this during an SNL opening act andddddddddddddd........it was in regards to Django Unchained..where he plays a freed slave. Based on where he said this (comedic situation) and in context to a slave movie........I give him a pass.

I respectfully disagree. What if it was switched and Christoph Walz said "I got to beat up black guys, it was fun" do you think that would go over well? I don't think so. That bit wouldn't ever be green lighted for a monologue.

I see that side. I guess because with the content of the movie, I read it as he got retribution with the white men.

I find it hard also to distinguish the line between ill-intent and comedy when it comes to race and comedians. For example, I love Lisa Lampanelli, and I know she's not racist, but she sure says a lot of bad things regarding race and stereotypes.
