Let's discuss: Chef Anthony Bourdain calls Paula Deen "most dangerous person to America" ( not celeb-related, more weight related)

Chef Anthony Bourdain isn’t one to mince words when it comes to his nemesis Paula Deen.

Shortly after the announcement that she was teaming up with a drug company to promote a diabetes medication, Bourdain Tweeted a thinly-veiled diss at the Food Network star.

“Thinking of getting into the leg-breaking business, so I can profitably sell crutches later,” he wrote.

Bourdain has previously called Deen, who revealed her three-year struggle with Diabetes Tuesday, “the most dangerous person to America.”

"She revels in unholy connections with evil corporations, and she's proud of the fact that her food is f--king bad for you," Bourdain said of the Food Network star, who is famous for her butter-heavy recipes.

"I would think twice before telling an already obese nation that it is OK to eat food that is killing us," Bourdain wrote. "Plus, her food sucks."

Deen, 64, fired back at Bourdain at the time, saying the “No Reservations” star should “get a life.”

But Bourdain was quick to clarify his latest criticism for Deen.

“For the record: Never called anybody a ‘diabetic scam artist.’,” he wrote, firing back at a TMZ headline. “TMZ’s words. Not mine.”

"Biggest Loser" trainer Bob Harper also called out Deen's recipes and lifestyle.

""Her food is just entirely too decadent. If you eat like that, it's going to come back and bite you," he told People magazine. "She's going to have to get in the kitchen and find a way to get creative with the foods she loves to eat, make them healthier."

It's no secret that woman cooks fattening food.

I don't think this was part of her master plan, cook, eat, get diabetes & then market diabetes drugs.

I would respect her more if she started experimenting in making food that's good & better for you. (And I will still make & love her crab cake recipe!)

it is interesting that she teamed up with a medication company to promote a diabetes medication...

and it does give pause, right?

her food is yummy, but is it unhealthy? yes.
and you'd think if she was suffering from diabetes for 3 years, wouldn't maybe her menu change a bit?

thoughts?

You are an idiot if you think you can make her food every night and its ok. . .you deserve whatever happens to you.

However, if your family is coming over for Thanksgiving and you want to make mac and cheese that is AMAZING and uses 4lbs of butter. . .she is your girl . . .I love her food but I don't eat it every day and to blame her for people being fat or diabetic is insane.

Still better than fast food IMO!

I think that the fact she is now a paid spokes person for a diabetes company while pushing her completely unhealthy food really does give me pause. If she came out three years ago and said something then it would not bother me as much. But it feels like she purposefully mislead people into thinking they could eat her food. With that said, I feel like if you had even half a brain cell you would know that eating the food she prepared on a constant basis would cause problems down the line. Who eats 2 donuts as the bun for a hamburger? I mean it screams irresponsibility to me.

this is the angle I thought of, too.

Clearly her food is not healthy for consumption every day, but does she have a personal responsibility as a Chef with diabetes who has her entire line of cookbooks, etc, to switch it up a bit and make it healthier?

AMEN!

Is her food good? HELLZ yeah it is!
Would you WANT to eat it? Umm Double yeah
Should you eat it in large portions as often as possible? Umm probably not

Who cares?
So are we going to say Emeril is a ***** worshiper because he likes pasta? Is Jacque Torres a peddler of diabietes with his chocolate concoctions?

What ever happend to self control and moderation? So he doesn't like her food, so what?

Makes me want to go put on her Tshirt I got when I visited her restuarant in Savannah. haha I've been to HIS restaurant in NYC and I would loathe to ever go there again. I hated the food and walked out starving but grateful it was on someone else's dime. (ETA: I couldn't wait to go, hubby and I love his show, but the food was horrible such a let down)

ETA: not that i matters but she's done some healthy options too. Just easy to hang your hat on her other stuff (cause its good and we want it). The Biggest Loser chic sounds like she's joining the band wagon. I mean Paula's not the ONLY cook out there with heavy butter. Speaking of Emeril his Garlicky Clams & Mussels Pasta calls for an entire stick of butter for one pound of pasta.

While I don't think I personally would classify her as 'the most dangerous person to America', I'm not surprised that she has diabetes. Her food is loaded with fat, saturated fat, sugar, and calories. Most of the recipes she makes are, IMO, 'special occasion'/'once in awhile' foods.

I'm also not surprised that her PR team is going to spin this in a way to market her to a whole new audience. I agree with Bourdain for calling her out like that. That's how he is, and part of the reason why I think he's flippin' cool.

DITTO!
It's common sense people!
It's like people trying to sue fast food restaurants for making them fat.
Ummm- did you really think eating a Big Mac every day was healthy for you?
Come on now...
It's called moderation and self control.

Paula Deen just presents recipes.

Its up to individuals to decide what they put in their mouths.

Exactly.

I don't think she eats like this all the time either - her show is part entertainment and part wow factor.

But I don't like that she's partnered up with a drug company and I believe her son is doing a show or cookbook to revamp her recipes to make them more health conscious. Talk about double dipping!

I think she should have come clean three years ago after being diagnosed or if she wanted to keep things private, she shouldn't have agreed to endorse this drug.

As for her food? I'm sure it tastes great but for regular consumption, it's not advisable.

As for Bourdain? I like him, I like his food and I like his show, but he's a pompous ass. I don't agree with calling her the most dangerous person to America, that is hyperbole and down right slanderous. Heck, if he's got such a hard on for eating healthy why doesn't he go after the fast food industry? I'd say they're more of a threat and not just to America but globally.

He gets an Chat Icon from me.

Re: Let's discuss: Chef Anthony Bourdain calls Paula Deen "most dangerous person to America" ( not celeb-related, more weight related)

I think she's well aware of the rich foods she broadcasts, sells, and puts in her recipe books. If not her son Bobby wouldn't have his own FN show and be able to toot his own horn with making her recipes with half the fat, half the calories.
I'm not surprised she's teaming up with a drug company to promote medication for diabetes over diet. I didn't think to look for her name on the Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig spokesperson list!

Well OBVIOUSLY everyone is responsible for their own food choices. We don't even have to argue that.

My big thing with this: It's shady as hell that she's teaming up with a drug company. It's better to alter her diet, but who am I to tell that to someone who thinks butter is life?

And to emphasize Bourdian's point here: "She revels in unholy connections with evil corporations, and she's proud of the fact that her food is f--king bad for you."

He's speaking in hyperbole to try to get his point across but it's not working.

I think he's ridiculous to call her out.

She has no responsibility to share with anyone that she has diabetes.

I doubt she planned it this way.

There are a lot more worthy targets he can rail against if he has a problem with eating fattening food.

OOOh twinkie pie

I might have to make that for our Teacher Appreciate day next month. Sounds delish!

The rest I wouldn't like so I'll pass. I can say the same for any chef. Some is good and some is stuff I would/could pass on.

Again, if you ate her stuff day in and day out, you'd be in for a world of hurt but just HAVING the recepie isn't harming america.

I SERIOUSLY need to try the twinkie pie LOL

I dunno let's be honest PD didn't come out because she knew her food is probably a contributor of the main issue of her illness. I am not a fan of her nor her food and i am fat. I don't eat globs of butter, or lick mayo like its a lolli pop but I do understand if you do that you will get sick.

I lost complete respect for her when she says she will be a speaking for a drug company.

As for AB he goes over the line with everything. He wanted to make a statement and he did and now is being noticed for it. I don't think PD is the biggest threat or evil in the US but I certainly think she isn't a positive role model as wonderful of a person she seems to be.

I can't even watch her show. Everything looks so delicious but she puts a million sticks of butter in everything. There's no way I'd cook anything like that.

Forgot to add how much I love this pic!

We are all adults and we are all equally accountable to make the decision on how we cook. I typically watch what I eat but I have made a couple of her recipes on occasion. I know that I have extremely high cholesterol and can't have butter and deep fried foods every night for dinner because it's my own responsibilty. However, I do not agree with her being a spokeperson for anything health related. She promotes unhealthy cooking for a living so it just makes her look ridiculous to then switch between the 2

It's like Ritalin sponsering Chuck E. Cheese, or vice versa. I find this partnership quite shady. It's like "Watch my show/Buy my books, products, etc. and, if you end up with diabetes, buy the medication I endorse."

This. I agree completely. I don't like her food for the most part since it is soooo unhealthy, but in moderation, I don't think it would harm you. However, it is odd that she's partnering with a diabetes company--I'd like to see if her menu changes.

I think it's all fair game for Bourdain.
